“Really annoying.” Roman and Ricky exchanged a knuckle bump and Ricky climbed in the car.

How dare they.

I opened my mouth.

“Let it go,” Michael whispered in my ear. “At least it’s something they can agree on.”

We stepped to the side as Ricky started the car. He backed out of the parking space. We stood in the hot Texas sun, watching him drive off, but halfway toward the exit he stopped and backed up.

I walked toward the car. He stopped and got out and pulled me into his arms.

He held the back of my head, his arm around my waist squeezed me so tight my heart burst. I grabbed the sides of his shirt. I didn’t want to let go. “Don’t forget about me, Little Tree.”

“Couldn’t if I tried.” He kissed me once more, got back in his car, and drove away.

With tears in my eyes, I waved like at the end of some silly romantic melodrama. During the worst moment in my life, I felt something I didn’t expect.

Hope.

Ricky and I, our story wasn’t over. It had barely begun.
