She leads me to the laundry room. “I thought Hunter was coming.”

“Me too.”

“This is something you might want to talk to him about.” She points at the stuff behind the washer. “The plumbing in here needs some work. Sounds like he was going to help you if you needed to do any minor work.”

“I’ll text him. He might be tied up at work.”

Twenty minutes later, there’s been no reply.

I can hear Katerina and the inspector talking, but I find my mind wandering to Hunter. I thought he’d at least text, but he is a policeman and it’s entirely possible that he’s busy.

Katerina calls me from the kitchen, “Hey. All done. He just found a few things. If Hunter is really going to help you, they will be low-cost things to take care of.”

I frown. “How much if he isn’t going to help me?”

“Maybe five to ten thousand if you have to hire contractors.”

“Are these critical things I’d need to do right away?”

“Sooner rather than later.”

Hm. I shake out my hands, I was obviously wringing them. “Okay. Let’s keep pushing on.”

“Hunter never called?”

I shake my head. “No, and I don’t know whether to be worried or irritated.”

CHAPTER 10

It was hard as hell not to show up on Rachel’s doorstep last night after dinner. But she needed her rest. And I needed to get my head right.

And not the head in my pants.

What am I really doing?

Losing my mind, obviously.

Fuck. Hooking up with Rachel again was amazing.

It awakened something in me that I tried to lie to myself about. I dig her. She just does it for me.

But we’re not just kids anymore. I don’t even know who I am any more, other than I’m not the guy I used to be.

I need to tell her just how different I am. I’m a father of an eleven-year-old.

Would she be okay with that?

Baggage, we’ve got it.

But that stupid cupid had his way with me anyway.

Which is why I can’t wait to see her. I glance at the clock. Four hours til I meet her for the house inspection. Four hours for me to get some work done.

I’m neck deep in reviewing a case when my phone vibrates in my pocket. Hoping it’s Rachel, I hurry to pull it out.

But it’s not her. The call is coming from Sheila’s number, which is weird.

“Hi, Sheila.”
