“Yeah, he mentioned it when I met him for dinner last night.”

A surge of jealousy burned the lining of his stomach despite the fact that Dayton Somers was happily married. He’d gotten to spend time with Lori while Zane had been holed up at work burning both ends of the damn candle fulfilling requests that Dayton had sent his way.

“Ah, I see. Yeah, the man doesn’t let up for a second, does he?”

“Nope. And talking to some of his business partners, he only gets worse.”

Zane groaned. “Great.”

“Which means we’ll have to grab any spare moments we have. And that leads me to the reason for my call. Are you free tonight? Sorry it’s late notice but—”

“I’m free. And even if I wasn’t, if there’s a chance I get to spend time with you, I’d stand up the President himself.”

“I’m honored.”

“I should think so. I just turned down dinner with our commander-in-chief to spend time with you.”

Her laugh came at him again, and his belly flipped over.

“You haven’t changed a bit. Why don’t you come over to my place at seven? Wear a suit. A good one.”

“Now I am intrigued.”

“You should be. I’ve outdone myself. Don’t be late.”

Zane returned to the boardroom with the goofiest smile plastered across his face. “Sorry for the interruption.”

“Someone’s gonna get laid.” Calum chuckled as Zane retook his seat at the head of the table.

“Well, would you look at that, folks? Calum has just offered to work the entire weekend on the Somers deal.”

Calum’s jaw slackened, and he shot a look at Laurella, who raised her hands in the air. “Don’t give me that hangdog expression, Brook. That mouth of yours often gets you into trouble. Ah, just think of the peace I’ll have this weekend. Bubble bath, candles, a good book. Bliss.”

Eric, his CFO, snickered. Calum homed right in, palms flat on the table, torso pitched forward.

“Fine. I’ll take one for the team. And as I’ll need some financials running, I volunteer Eric to work right alongside me.”

“I can’t,” Eric exclaimed. “I’ve got tickets to the boxing match at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night.”

“Too bad.” Calum cracked his knuckles, then stretched his arms overhead. “Misery loves company.”

Eric grumbled but caved into Calum’s demands. Zane grinned. One of Necron’s strengths was the dynamic of the board members Zane had handpicked. There were a lot of opposing personalities in this room, and while that didn’t make for a calm atmosphere, it created the perfect circumstances to drive success, evidenced by Necron’s meteoric growth over the past few years. Without the turnover charts showing a steep incline, Somers wouldn’t have ever given them the time of day.

Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Zane wrapped up the meeting and set off for his office, with Calum predictably following behind.

“You’re an ass,” Calum said, although his glittering eyes and twitching lips were a giveaway that he wasn’t in the least bit mad at having his weekend plans trashed.

“You walked right into my trap by being, well, you.”

Calum threw back his head and laughed. “Okay, bud, answer me this. Was I right?”

“No, you weren’t. Lori and I agreed to take it slow. Jumping into bed on our second date isn’t taking it slow.”

“You’ve waited thirteen fucking years. How much slower do you want to go?”

“It’s complicated.”
