“Bullshit. It’s only as complicated as you want to make it.”

“You’ve changed your tune from the conversation we had on Monday.”

“No, I haven’t. I’m still pissed at what she did to you. But the expression on your face when she called you just then… fuck, you looked happy. So go. Get some.”

“I’m not some rabid dog who can’t wait to hump her leg.”

“If you think it’s her leg you should hump, no wonder she cut you loose.”

As much as Zane tried to keep a straight face, Calum made it impossible. “Remind me again why I keep you around?”

“Because you think I’m fucking awesome.”

“Not nearly as much as you think you’re awesome.”

Calum threw his arms out wide. “When you’ve got it, you’ve got it.” He made for the door. “Make sure you send me all the deets I need on the Somers gig before you leave tonight. Wouldn’t want to interrupt your weekend of holding hands.”

“Fuck you.”

Calum’s laughter was still audible after he closed the door.

Jerk.

The taxi dropped him off outside Lori’s building at five before seven. She buzzed him straight up, and by the time he reached her apartment, the door was ajar.

He knocked once, called out her name, and entered. She appeared from his right wearing a flowing emerald-green dress with a high neckline. It finished mid-calf, pinched in at the waist, then flared over hips that his fingers itched to caress. She’d put her hair up in a twist, showing off the beautiful slope of her neck. Her makeup was light and understated, which suited her perfectly. Lori didn’t need thick layers of makeup to bring out her beauty. She shone with no outside influence. Slim-heeled, pale-cream shoes finished her outfit.

“Wow,” was all Zane managed as his eyes drank her in. His dick hardened, blood rushing from his head to his groin and leaving him light-headed.

“Wow, yourself.” She stood in front of him and brushed her hands over the lapels of his jacket. “You are quite possibly the handsomest man I’ve ever seen.”

He might’ve insisted to Calum that they were taking things slow, but now that he was here with Lori standing before him, he didn’t want slow. He wanted to peel that dress from her body, wrap her long, elegant legs around his waist, and fuck the last thirteen years of separation out of both of them.

Curving her hand around the back of his neck, she pulled him in for a kiss that shot from PG to NC-17 in less than a second. Her purse hit the floor with a thud as Zane steered her to the nearest wall. He circled his hips, groaning when he was rewarded with longed-for friction for his poor, desperate dick.

“I hope whatever you have in mind for tonight is worth the sacrifice of refraining from fucking you right here right now.” He traced his lips along her jawline, journeying down the slope of her neck.

“I’m not sure it is,” she replied, breathless, her voice needy. “Maybe we can convince ourselves that delayed gratification is a good thing.”

“It’s a terrible thing.”

He moved back to her mouth, capturing her lips once again. His tongue fought for superiority and won. His hips gyrated without permission. His cock strained for escape.

“Zane.” She ran her hands over his chest, her hunger as ravenous as his. “God.”

“Whatever plans you had, let’s ditch them and go to bed.” He trailed kisses along her jawline.

“We can’t.” Her chest heaved. “The limousine will be here any minute.”

“Limousine?”

She put some space between them, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. “It’s a surprise. But we can’t cancel, much as I’m tempted.”

“Can we fool around in the back of the limo?”

She giggled. “Maybe at the end of the night. We can’t arrive looking bedraggled.”

“Arrive where?”
