I browsed for a few minutes before I found the flowers I wanted. Liv had always loved those big colorful daisies, and one of the arrangements had a variety of them along with some lilies thrown in.

I took the flowers to the counter and paid for them, then took them to my truck. I headed to the hotel Liv was staying at, hoping to surprise her with the flowers and take her to brunch.

As I entered the lobby and passed the front desk, the receptionist stopped me. “Sir. Sir, your friend is not here at the moment.”

My brows furrowed as I redirected my path and went to the front desk. “How long ago did she leave?”

The young woman smiled. “About an hour ago. You can leave those here if you like. I’ll make sure she gets them.”

Although I wanted to give Liv the flowers myself, I didn’t want to carry them around all day while I tried to get in touch with her. “Okay.”

I set the arrangement down, then wrote a note on the little card that came with the flowers. I smiled up at the receptionist. “Please make sure she gets these as soon as she gets back.”

The woman nodded. “I will.”

I tried calling Liv again after I left the hotel, but she still didn’t answer. If she wasn’t sleeping off a hangover, then where was she?

I got in my truck and debated what to do to pass the time while I waited to hear back from Liv. Normally, I spent Sundays with Amber, but that wasn’t happening anymore.

I decided to call Tommy. I’d bailed on guys’ night the night before, and I figured I should make it up to him. He answered after a few rings. “Hello?”

“Hey. You busy?”

“Not really. Why?”

“Well, I figured that I could explain what happened last night over some poles and beers.”

“Now you’re speaking my language.”

I stopped at my place to pick up fishing poles, my tackle box, and an ice chest. Then I went to buy beer and bait before heading over to Tommy’s.

I honked as I pulled in his driveway, and he came out after a few seconds. He hopped in the passenger side and greeted, “You look like hammered shit.”

I chuckled. I hadn’t changed or showered since the day before. “Nice to see you, too.”

I reversed down the dirt road until I hit the main street. We talked about the weather and the water and how both would affect fishing. Once we made it to our favorite spot, we unloaded everything and set up.

I popped the top off a beer and handed it to Tommy, then did the same for myself. I took a swig, then opened the bag of jerky I’d bought for my breakfast and lunch.

Tommy cast his line as I took a bite of the dried meat. “So you gonna tell me what happened last night?”

I washed down the jerky with a gulp of beer. “I met up with Liv.”

“I didn’t ask for the CliffsNotes.”

I chuckled. “I took her to a bar in Morehead, and we had a few drinks.” A grin curved my lips as I remembered the night before it had gone to shit. “It was just like old times.”

He nodded. “But?”

Tommy knew me so well. “After that, we bought some beer and headed out to that lagoon on the outskirts of town. We drank some more, and things got a little heated.”

He arched a brow. “How heated?”

“Like she hopped on my lap and started kissing me heated.”

“That’s it? Aren’t we a little grown for just kissing?”

I shoved his arm and scoffed. “I stopped her. I have a girlfriend, remember?” I took a long pull of my beer. “Well, had a girlfriend.”
