He shook his head. “I saw that coming.”

“Amber deserves better. Obviously, there’s still something there between Liv and me, and now that Piper’s in the picture, it wouldn’t be fair to string her along.”

He nodded in agreement. “That’s true. So what are you going to do?”

I cast my line and sighed. “I don’t know. Liv ran off and hasn’t returned my calls or texts. I really want to see if we can work things out. You know, she’s always been it for me.”

“Yeah.” He took a swig of his beer. “Well, I hope it all works out for you, bud. I really do.”

Me too.

We fished for a couple of hours and ended up catching a few trout and bass before calling it a day. I dropped Tommy back off, then headed home to take a shower. I still hadn’t heard from Liv, but I hoped I would by the end of the night.

After I got out of the shower, I checked my phone and saw I had a text. I smiled when I saw who it was from.

Liv: Thank you for the flowers. I’m sorry about last night.

Me: You have nothing to be sorry for. Can we meet up and talk?

Liv: What about Amber?

* * *

How the hell did Liv know about Amber? I guess her mom could have told her, but that seemed unlikely. After Liv left, she didn’t really keep up with my personal life, but we did live in a small town, and everyone pretty much knew everyone’s business.

Me: I’ll explain everything. Please meet me?

My stomach knotted as I waited for her reply. A few minutes ticked by, and I feared she wouldn’t respond. Then her message finally popped up on my screen.

Liv: Ok. You want to meet me at my hotel?

Yes.

Me: Yes. I’ll be there in 20

Liv: Ok

I dressed, then headed downstairs. As I was grabbing my keys, my mom blocked my path to the door.

Shit.

Her arms were crossed over her chest as she tapped her foot in irritation. “Lincoln Matthew Bennett, what in God’s name has gotten in to you?”

I loved my momma, but I didn’t want to get into the details of my love life with her. At least not at that moment. “Mom, can we talk about this later?”

Her brows furrowed and she scoffed. “No, I think we should talk about it now. Why would you break up with Amber after everything she’s done for you?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. “Look, Mom, I’m a grown man, and I can make my own decisions. And if one of those decisions is breaking up with Amber, then that’s just something you have to deal with.”
