My mom frowned. “So Liv just comes back into town, and no one else matters?”

I gritted my teeth, trying to bite my tongue before I said something I regretted. “No, but Liv and I had a child together, Mom. We met our daughter yesterday, and now I have all kinds of feelings I don’t know what to do with. You know I’ve always loved Liv, and I always will. And if there’s a chance I can get her back, then I’m going to take it.”

My mother’s face softened, and she dropped her arms. “I know this must be hard for you, but I don’t think you’re making the right decision. Liv left you when things got hard, and Amber has always been there when you needed her. Don’t forget that.”

She stepped out of my way and smiled sadly. I kissed her cheek before I walked out, hoping she understood where I was coming from. Surely, if it was her and my dad in the same situation, she would feel the same way.

I tried not to speed as I made my way to Liv’s hotel. I wasn’t sure how the night was going to go, but I hoped we might be able to pick up where we left off.

My stomach was tense with nerves as I stood outside Liv’s hotel room. I held up my hand to knock.

Here goes nothing.

LIV

Butterflies swarmed my stomach as I waited for Lincoln to arrive. I wasn’t sure how our conversation was going to go, and I couldn’t make sense of my feelings. On the one hand, I wanted to explore what was rekindling between us, but on the other, it didn’t make sense. My life was in Charlotte, and I’d closed the door on us when I left. Not to mention he had a girlfriend.

My mom’s advice played in my head. What is life without love?

A knock sounded, breaking me from my thoughts. My chest tightened as I got up to answer the door. I stopped as I grabbed the knob and let out the breath I’d been holding.

Here we go.

I opened the door, and our eyes immediately met. The sight of him always did something to my insides that I could never explain. I guessed some things never changed. “Hey,” he greeted.

I could tell he was nervous by his tense posture and smile. I knew all of his different smiles by heart, even after not seeing them for so long.

I just didn’t realize how much I’d missed them until then.

“Hi.” I stepped aside so he could come in. After closing the door behind him, I darted my eyes up to his. “Can I get you something? There’s not much in here, but there is a coffeemaker and tea.”

Lincoln’s real smile replaced his nervous one. “I’m good, but thank you.”

I clasped my hands together and took a seat on the loveseat. Lincoln gestured to the space next to me. “Can I join you?”

I nodded, and he sat next to me. I could practically feel the connection between us sparking to life as his skin hovered mere inches from mine.

Lincoln rubbed his hands together. “So … about last night.”

The embarrassment from the night before resurfaced as a knot in my throat. I swallowed it down and nodded. I told myself I would let him explain himself before jumping to conclusions or making accusations. “What about it?”

Lincoln sighed. “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. The only reason I stopped you was because I had a girlfriend.”

I arched a brow. “Had, as in past tense?”

He nodded. “This morning, I broke things off with her. It wasn’t fair to her to string her along when I—”

I turned my head to look at him when he paused, and his stormy eyes met mine. My stomach flip-flopped. “When you what?”

His gaze darted to my lips, then back up to my eyes. My breath caught as I waited for his reply. “When I still have feelings for you. It’s always been you, Liv.”

His words were exactly what I wanted to hear, breaking the barrier between us. Neither of us could fight our attraction any longer. Our mouths crashed together as Lincoln tangled his hands in my hair. His tongue parted my lips as I climbed onto his lap.

His hands moved down my body to grip my ass, and he groaned in my mouth as he pushed me down on his firm erection.

I gasped, breaking the kiss. Lincoln took my bottom lip between his teeth and nibbled on it as I rested my forehead against his. It had been so long since I’d felt his skin against mine, and I needed more.

Tugging at his shirt, I pulled it over his head. I ran my hands over his broad chest, reveling in the feel of his defined muscles. Lincoln had always been in shape in high school because of sports, but his body had definitely matured over the years.
