I smiled as I thought about the reason I was late. Liv was worth mucking stables for. I grabbed my phone from my back pocket and typed her a text.

Me: I have to muck stables because of you
* * *
A few minutes passed before she replied.
* * *
Liv: Hope I was worth it
Me: You’re worth every damn minute
Liv: :)
* * *
“Those stalls ain’t gonna muck themselves!” my dad yelled.
I chuckled, then put my phone back in my pocket. I slipped my gloves on, grabbed a shovel, then got to work.
After about an hour, my phone rang. I set the shovel against the wall, then pulled off my gloves to answer the call.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Bennett? This is Emily, Piper’s mom.”
I straightened, intrigued by her call. “Hi, Mrs. Andrews, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I see where Piper gets her charm from.” She chuckled. “I was just calling because Piper has been begging us nonstop since Saturday to see that horse you were talking about.”
Happiness filled me. “Good ole Buttercup.”
“Yes, well, we were hoping we could bring her to your farm on Saturday to see Buttercup.”
I didn’t think the day could get any better, but I’d been wrong. “That sounds great. I’ll have her all cleaned up and ready to go.”
“Great. We’ll see you Saturday.”
We talked over details before ending the call. Then, I sent a text to Liv to tell her the good news.

Me: You’ll never guess who I just talked to
Liv: Who
Me: Mrs. Andrews just called to ask if they could bring Piper to see Buttercup on Saturday
Liv: OMG, are you serious?!
Me: Yeah, so don’t make any plans for Saturday

I was thrilled with how things were going. If we could make visits with Piper a weekly thing, eventually we might even be able to do twice a week or even a weekend sleepover like she would with an aunt or grandparents. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but I couldn’t help it. I’d never dreamed in a thousand years that I’d get a second chance with Liv or that we’d be able to spend time with the daughter we gave up.
