I didn’t know what the future had in store, but as long as Liv and Piper were in it, I’d be a happy man.

That night, I went to pick Liv up to take her to dinner. I knocked on her hotel room door, bouquet in hand, and waited for her to answer.

When she opened the door, I couldn’t help but smile. Liv looked amazing in a white sundress with little purple flowers on it and her hair curled in soft waves. “Hey.”

“Hi.” I leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek. “You look beautiful.”

She smiled. “Thank you. Please come in.”

She stepped aside for me to enter, then closed the door behind me. When she turned around, I offered her the flowers. “These are for you.”

She blushed. “Thank you. That was sweet of you.”

“Ready to go?”

She sighed as she set the flowers down on the table.

“Linc, I think we need to talk first.”

No man ever wanted to hear those words. I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat. “About?”

She sat at the table and folded her hands together on the tabletop. “I think we rushed into things too quickly. We shouldn’t have had sex so soon after you just ended a relationship. We should have talked about things first.”

“Okay,” I replied, leaning back against the arm of the couch. “Let’s talk then.”

Mouth agape, she blinked several times before chuckling. “Well, it’s too late for that now.”

I shook my head. “It’s never too late. You’re right. We should’ve talked before jumping in the sack, but we didn’t, and we can’t take it back. And frankly, I wouldn’t even if we could. I don’t regret last night at all.”

Her cheeks flushed, and she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “I never said that I regretted it.”

That was a relief. I was beginning to think she felt like the night before was a mistake. I crossed my arms over my chest. “Well, what are you trying to say, Liv?”

Sitting back in her chair, she sighed in frustration. “I don’t know. I have all sorts of feelings right now that I can’t make sense of, and I’m a little overwhelmed.”

“I’ll say.” I laughed. “Look, Liv, this whole situation is surreal, to say the least. I never thought I’d see you again, let alone meet our daughter. Last night may have been rushed, but that doesn’t change the way I feel about you. I’ve loved you since the moment I saw you, and I still do.”

Her eyes searched mine, seeking the truth in my words. “You still love me?”

“Of course, I still love you. I never stopped loving you.”

A few tears trickled down her cheeks. “I love you, too, Linc. I’m sorry for everything.”

My chest tightened with emotion. Hearing her say that after so long was music to my ears. I pushed off the couch and knelt in front of her, cupping her face in my hands. “Don’t cry, Liv. I hate seeing you cry.”

I wiped the tears from her face before tenderly kissing her.

She pressed her forehead against mine. “So what does this mean for us?”

I smiled, closing my eyes and savoring the moment. “I’ll take whatever you’ll give me.”

She kissed me again, then pulled back to look me in the eyes. “Let’s take things slow. I don’t want either of us to get hurt again. Plus, our main focus needs to be Piper.”

I ran my knuckles down her cheek, happy that she wanted to try to make things work between us even if it was at a slower pace than I wanted. “Okay.”

Standing, I offered my hand to Liv to help her up. “Ready to go?”

She smiled and took my hand. “Yes.”
