I took Liv to a seafood place on the waterfront. After we ordered, we talked about my conversation with Piper’s mom.

“They’re going to come to your farm on Saturday with Piper?”

I nodded. “Yep. Mrs. Andrews said that Piper has been begging them to meet Buttercup since they got back home Saturday.”

Liv grinned. “I can’t believe it. What if this becomes a regular thing, Linc? What if we can have a real relationship with our daughter?”

I reached across the table and grabbed her hand. “The same thoughts have crossed my mind. That would be a dream come true.”

She squeezed my hand. “It really would.” We stared at each for a few moments before Liv asked, “Did you talk to your parents about it?”

I shook my head. “I wanted to talk to you about it first.”

“Do you think they’ll be okay with it?”

“I’m pretty sure they will. They’ve been dying to meet Piper since I got the letter.”

Her smile fell. “I bet they hate me.”

I chuckled. “Hate is a strong word.”

She gave me an annoyed look. “I broke their only son’s heart. I’m pretty sure they hate me.”

I chuckled. “Well, I forgave you, so they will, too. They have to—you’re the mother of their grandchild.”

Liv forced a smile. “I hope so.”

I knew my mom would take some winning over, but I hoped that Liv and my parents could reconcile so that we could all get along. I didn’t need them to be at odds around Piper. “How about we have dinner this week before Saturday so that we can clear the air?”

Liv’s face paled. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean, we are still working out what this is between us and figuring out our relationship with Piper.”

I leaned forward and locked eyes with her. “Liv, you have to face them sooner or later, and if you’re going to come to the farm Saturday, it needs to happen before then. I don’t want there to be any tension when Piper and her parents come over. That might change their minds about letting us see her.”

She sighed. “You’re right. You know I’ve never been good with confrontation.”

I caressed the back of her hand with my thumb. “I know. But I’m going to be there with you every step of the way.”

“What did I do to deserve you?” she asked, a wistful smile on her face.

“You must have been a saint in a prior life,” I teased.

She smacked her teeth and laughed. “Yeah, right.”

The waiter brought our food and refilled our drinks. As Liv took a bite of her seafood pasta, I asked, “Have you been on a horse since you became a city girl?”

She finished chewing her food before answering, “No, I haven’t since I moved.”

“I guess I’ll have to give you a refresher before Piper comes. Go for a ride like old times.”

Liv smiled, her cheeks flushing. “I’d like that.”

After we finished dinner, I took Liv back to her hotel and walked her to her door.

She glanced up at me and smiled. “Thank you for tonight. I had a great time.”

I wasn’t ready for the night to be over, and after having Liv the night before, I wanted more. But she’d said she wanted to take things slow, so I wanted to respect her wishes. “Me too.”

We stared at each other for several seconds, the connection between us buzzing like an electric current like it always did. Liv darted her eyes to my lips, licking hers as she brought her gaze back to mine.
