I chuckled. “You’ll never guess. Might as well just relax and enjoy the surprise.”

Liv muttered under her breath but still had the same smile on her face. I knew that deep down, she was loving every minute of our impromptu adventure.

After we parked the truck, I grabbed our bags, and we headed into the airport. We checked our bags, went through security, and headed to our gate right as boarding was about to start.

“Highlands, North Carolina, huh?” Liv said, reading the flight information at our gate.

“Yep. Can’t really hide that part anymore, but our destination will still be a surprise,” I replied with a smirk.

She cocked her head at me. “You really went through a lot of trouble for all this, didn’t you?”

I put my arm around her waist, drawing her close to me. “I did. You deserve the best, Liv, and I want to give it to you.”

Her cheeks flushed as she put her hands on my chest and smiled up at me. “The fact that you still love me after everything I put you through is the best surprise you could’ve ever given me.”

Damn, she always had a way of burrowing herself deeper into my heart. Leaning down, I softly pressed my lips to hers. “Nothing you could ever do will make me stop loving you.” I placed my hand over the one she had covering my heart. “My heart has always been and will always be yours, Liv.”

Her eyes darted to my lips before she closed the small distance between us and kissed me again. We didn’t break apart until they announced the final boarding call for our flight.

I couldn’t help but focus on her swollen lips. Her cheeks were flushed, and she was out of breath, and I loved that I was still able to make her react that way.

I ran my knuckles down her cheek. “We better get going.”

She nodded, linking our fingers together as I led her to the jetway.

If that kiss was any indication of how our weekend was going to be, I didn’t have anything to worry about.

Liv bombarded me with questions the whole flight and forty-minute drive to our destination, but I didn’t let too much slip. The anticipation was killing her, but I reassured her that it would be worth it.

The scenery along the drive was so different from Beaufort. Mountains and forests replaced beaches and farmland, and Liv’s eyes were wide with splendor as she gazed outside her window.

“Almost there,” I commented, a grin tipping my lips. The trip was already worth her smile and look in her eyes.

The sign for our destination greeted us as I turned off the main road to enter the grounds.

“Half Mile Farm,” Liv read aloud.

I drove down the rustic dirt drive until we reached the main building.

“Wow,” Liv remarked, peering out the windshield at our destination. “This place is beautiful.”

I kept driving to the parking area. Lush trees, mountains, and a private lake surrounded the rustic inn I’d booked for our weekend getaway.

Once I parked, we both stepped out. “What is this place, Lincoln?”

“Half Mile Farm Resort and Spa,” I answered, meeting her at the back of the car. “Our romantic mountain escape; I booked us a balcony suite with a lake view and the deluxe romance package.” I waggled my eyebrows at her.

She playfully rolled her eyes as a huge smile lit up her face. “I don’t even know what to say.” Her gaze roamed over the property, taking everything in before looking back at me. “Thank you so much.”

I grabbed our bags from the trunk and extended my hand to her. “Let’s get checked in.”

The lobby reminded me of a sophisticated log cabin with stone and wood accents, a rustic fireplace, and simple yet refined décor. Definitely nicer than any hotel I’d ever stayed in.

After we checked in, I led Liv to our room. I was starving from the long day of traveling, and I’d planned for us to have dinner at the resort’s house restaurant that evening. Not to mention I was anxious to get settled in and start our vacation.

I opened the door to our room and went inside. Rose petals decorated the bed and a bottle of champagne, strawberries, and assorted cheeses were set out on the dining table.

Liv made a beeline for the champagne and squealed with delight. “You got champagne?”
