“How long for what?” I respond.

“How long are you going to keep her like this?”

I shake my head. “I’m not doing this with you today, Margaret.”

She walks around the hospital bed. “Jaxon, please. This is no life for her. For anyone. She’s stuck in here, hooked up to tubes and wires. I can’t take seeing her like this.”

“So, you’d rather see her in a casket? You think I like seeing her like this? You think this is the life I wanted? She may not have any quality of life, but, at least, she has a life. At least, she’s breathing.”

“But not on her own,” her father responds. “Jaxon, I know it’s hard for you to let go. Hell, Margaret and I don’t want to let her go either. But seeing her like this is much harder.”

“She could wake up. We don’t know.”

Her father shakes his head. “She won’t. Jaxon, we’re begging you. Will you, at least, consider our feelings in the matter?”

I shake my head. “No. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have someplace to be.”

I’m halfway out the door when her mother calls out to me. I stop, keeping my back turned toward them. “We’re her parents. And we know what’s best for her. If it were up to us, we’d take her off the machine and allow her to go peacefully with God.”

I turn around and face them both. “Well, then it’s a good thing it’s not up to you, isn’t it?”

CHAPTER 3

JAXON

I finally heard from Kai. She agreed to meet with me, but not at the restaurant I suggested. Instead, she invited me over for dinner. I anxiously ring the doorbell, and a few seconds pass before the door swings open. She looks breathtaking. “Hey, come in.” I can’t help but watch her perfect ass sway from side to side as I follow her into the kitchen. That dress she’s wearing is going to be the death of me. She reaches the stove and turns the burner off. “I just finished making the green beans.”

I take a seat at the island and watch her as she slides her hand out of an oven mitt. Nostalgia sets in as I watch her work her way around the kitchen. It was one of my favorite pastimes, watching her cook. Kai may be great at her job in finance, but she was born to cook. Her red curls hang past her shoulders, a perfect contrast to the black dress she’s wearing. It hugs her body tightly, outlining her slim waist and curvy hips. I shake away my thoughts. I no longer have the right to claim her. To want her the way I do. “It smells good in here.”

She pulls fresh lettuce from the refrigerator and spins around to face me. “Thank you.”

I jump right in. “Kai, I—”

She holds a hand up, interrupting me. “Stop.”

Confusion sets in. Did she bring me here just to tell me that she doesn’t care about what I have to say? Is this why she asked me to come here instead of meeting me at the restaurant? I stand. “We need to talk. I thought that’s why you invited me over.”

She shakes her head. “We will talk. But let me finish making dinner, first. I don’t need the distraction while I’m making the salad.”

I nod. “Okay.”

“Can you grab the colander please?” It’s like old times. She does the cooking, and I grab whatever she needs. I open the cabinet where she used to keep it, but I’m met with long-stem wine glasses placed neatly in a row. “I rearranged the cabinets. It’s the next one.”

I open the next one, grab the colander, and place it in the sink for her. We turn around at the same time and bump into each other. My hand flies to her waist on impulse. She looks up at me, and I recognize that look right away. She’s turned on. Her green eyes swirl with heat and passion. She gulps as she swallows hard, trying her best to contain herself. My hand slides up her back slowly, reveling in the feel of her. I’ve missed her. Missed this. I lean in and place my lips on hers. They taste like the green beans she’s prepared. She’s hesitant, at first, as the war between her mind and her body battles it out. But eventually, her body wins, and she kisses me back. The kiss is laced with anger. Hurt. Need. I pull my lips from hers. “Do you have any idea how badly I want to place you on this counter and eat you?”

She sucks in a breath before answering me. “What’s stopping you?”

I don’t hesitate for a second. Because at any moment now, she may realize she’s making a mistake and force me to stop. I smirk before my lips crash into hers again. She moans seductively as her tongue swirls with mine. I break the kiss, lift her dress, then place her gently on the counter. “If you don’t want this, tell me now, Kai. Because once I start, I won’t be able to stop.

She nods. “I want this.”

I drop to my knees, and her head snaps down, waiting for what comes next. I slide her panties off and toss them somewhere over by the refrigerator. She’s wet. Dripping wet for me. She spreads her legs, inviting me to taste, touch, or do whatever I have in mind. Her smoldering eyes hold my stare. “Wider.”

She spreads them wider on my command, and I place my mouth on her sweet pussy. She cries out when my tongue makes contact. “Oh my…” My tongue swirls her clit, flooding her body with pleasure. I lick, suck, and tease, just enough to bring her to the edge. But then I stop. Her head snaps down again, wondering why.

“Last chance.”

She shakes her head. “Don’t stop.”
