Owen and I haven’t slept together yet. But he was going to be next. Jaxon walks over to his suitcase and fumbles through his clothes. “Well, whoever he is, he’s been calling since six this morning.”

“Wait, what?”

I grab my phone again, and sure enough, I have about four missed calls from Owen. A red flag that would usually have me breaking things off before they even get started. But now is not the time. Not when I’m around Jaxon. I’ll call him tomorrow when I get back and break it off. I place my phone back down on the nightstand. “I’m going to shower.”

Jaxon looks back at me. “Sounds good. We’ll head to breakfast when you’re done.”

JAXON

I wanted to answer her phone. I wanted to tell him that Kai was unavailable. Now and forever. I also wanted to tell him that if he ever called her again, I’d hunt him down and break his neck. But I didn’t. Because as much as I hate the fact that she’s dating, fucking, or doing whatever it is she does, there’s nothing I can do about it. I have no right to tell her to stop. I would look foolish to tell her to forget about the others because I’m all she’ll ever need. The truth is I can’t be all she’ll need. Because Summer needs me, too. I glance down at my latest text from Adrian, telling me that things are all good at The Coma Center. Kai notices my expression. “Everything okay?”

I slide my phone into my pocket. “Yeah, everything is good. Just checking in with Adrian about work.”

“Adrian works for you?”

“Yeah, he does.”

“Please tell him I said hello. Also tell him he was a complete jackass on his date with Kenzie.”

“Yeah, he told me about that. He didn’t mean to rush out on her.”

She huffs. “No excuse.”

Kai doesn’t know that the reason Adrian ran out on Kenzie that night is because of me. After I got that phone call, I texted him, asking if he could come to my place. I told him it was an emergency. He couldn’t tell Kenzie the real reason he had to rush off, because she would have told Kai. “I’ll tell him.”

We make our way to the front of the line and hand over our tickets. We’re led into our seat and the attendant locks us both in. The wheel slowly moves us up as the next couple gets in below us. “Are you sure you’re okay with this? It goes pretty high, and you ate a big breakfast.”

I’ll be okay.”

I nod. We’re way on top now, and she looks out into the clear, blue skyline. The ocean sparkles from the rays of the sun. The people walking below us look small, and the seagulls fly above us, hawking loudly. The Ferris wheel starts to move. I look down. “We’re finally moving.”

It makes its way around slowly, giving us a perfect view of the area each time we hit the top. Kai continues to look down in awe of the view. We don’t talk much while we ride. My mind is still on the guy who has access to the girl I want for myself. And her mind is on, well…whatever her mind is on. After about five trips around, the ride ends, and the attendant unlocks the door and allows us to step out. “Do you want to ride again?” I ask her.

“Thank you, but no. One ride is enough for me.”

We arrive at the area where the games are, and she becomes giddy with excitement. “I have to have one of those bears.”

I hand the attendant the cash and step up to the front. He throws me the ball, and I shoot my first hoop. It isn’t successful. I give him more cash and try a second time. Again unsuccessful. By the fifth time, I’m starting to think the rim is rigged. I’m no NBA star, but I sure as hell can land some hoops. Finally, the ball goes in, and the siren goes off. Kai smiles widely as she points to the pink bear she was eyeing. The attendant takes it down and hands it to her. “Thank you.”

I laugh out loud. “I wasn’t leaving until I won.”

We spend the rest of the day walking up and down the boardwalk. Playing games. Eating cotton candy and funnel cakes. I check in with Adrian periodically to make sure Summer is doing okay. By the time the evening rolls around, we’re both exhausted. “How about we head back to the hotel room, order some food, and enjoy a quiet night in?”

“You read my mind.”

I kick my shoes off as soon as we enter the hotel room. Kai does the same. She plops down on the bed. “I need a shower.”

“You go ahead. I’m going to make a call.”

She grabs her things and rushes to the bathroom. As soon as I hear the shower turn on, I call Adrian.

“Hey.”

“Hey, everything good?”

“Yes, everything is good. Nothing’s changed since the last time I told you…thirty minutes ago.”

I sit on the edge of the bed. “Okay. Good.”
