She scoffed, clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth and rolling her eyes. “I’m not getting drunk. It’s just for the nerves.”

“Are you nervous?” I tilted my head to the side, satisfied when she huffed.

She softened, dropping her head against the counter. “Maybe a little bit,” she admitted. Her voice was small, and I had to strain to hear her.

As if on cue, lightning flashed across the kitchen wall, and a loud clap of thunder made the windows shake. Amanda squealed before quickly covering her mouth. She giggled, deciding to open the bottle after all. The red wine sloshed into the glass, and she lifted it to her lips to take a long gulp.

“Come here.” I sounded shorter than I had intended, and when she got up from the barstool she was in, I pulled her over to me and into my lap.

She sighed, settling against me. “You’re still mad.” Amanda nodded, reconfirming her thoughts to herself.

“I’m not mad,” I said, drawing slow circles on her back. “I just didn’t like them flirting with you.” I wanted to protect her—wanted her to know she’d always be safe with me. I wanted her to be mine to protect. Did she know that?

Another flash of lightning brightened her face, and she stiffened, burying her face against my neck. The thunder was louder than the first crash, and Amanda whimpered while her body quivered. “Ugh,” she groaned. “I hate thunderstorms.”

“You liked it earlier,” I smirked, remembering the way her body felt melting against mine. She had shivered and clung to me, and her soaked clothes displayed every curve of her body. My cock stirred beneath her.

She shook her head. “That was just rain. It was different.”

“And I was kissing you.” I wiggled my eyebrows at her, and she blushed. I reveled in the sweet pink tones that darkened her cheeks.

Amanda giggled, and I wanted to drink the sound until I was drunk on it. “That too,” she said.

She lazily leaned forward with her eyes locked on my lips and hers parted. I braced my hands against her back, eager to taste the desperation in her kiss again. Before I could, another flash of lightning made the room go dark. Amanda shrieked.

“Did the power just go out?” Her voice was tainted with the panic that buzzed through her body. “Oh no. Oh no!”

“It’ll come back on.” I nuzzled her neck, but it didn’t take away the anxiety that suddenly overwhelmed her.

She started to climb out of my lap, but I tightened my hold on her. “Let me go,” she whined. “I need to light some candles.”

“You just need to relax.” I squeezed her, but she still fought against me. Standing up from the barstool, I set her on top of the counter, holding her there. “I’ll light the candles, you stay here.”

Amanda fidgeted, like she couldn’t possibly stay still, but she nodded. Her hands closed around the edge of the counter, and she gripped it like the faux marble surface could protect her from the storm outside.

I listened to her shallow breathing behind me while I found her lighter and lit the candles on the shelves. They lit up the room with a soft glow that flickered on the walls. It was peaceful with the rain on the window and the dancing flames on the candles, and I turned around to see Amanda perched on the counter.

She looked terrified but beautiful. Her eyes were wide, and while she gnawed on her lip, lightning flashed behind me. Amanda winced, but when I reached her and put my hands on her hips, she relaxed. She looked so young when she leaned her body against me, making herself as small as she could.

“How long do you think it’ll last?” she whispered.

I shrugged, rubbing her back. “There’s no telling.” When she whimpered, my chest squeezed. The throbbing between my legs reminded me she was in a small pair of shorts and a sweatshirt—that there was only a small amount of fabric separating me from hearing her fall apart. I smirked. “Let me distract you.”

“What?” Amanda fluttered her lashes at me.

I put my hands on her knees and pushed her legs apart, positioning myself between them. “How many times do you think I can make you come apart on this counter before the power comes back on?”

Amanda gasped, and the sound went straight to my cock. “I don’t know,” she said, but she leaned back, resting her hands on the smooth surface behind her.

“There’s only one way to find out.” I smirked, hooking my fingers under the waistband of her shorts and tugging.

She lifted her hips, allowing me to remove them. I traced the goose bumps that formed on her thighs, dropping the fabric to the floor and moving to the hem of her sweatshirt. Amanda held her breath while I removed it.

I stared at the light from the candles dancing along her curves, and I didn’t want to take my eyes off her. She shivered when I licked my lips, and her nipples tightened. Thunder crashed, and Amanda gasped, shutting her eyes and covering herself.

“Drake!” she whined. She looked so small, and my throat tightened.

I kissed her lips before trailing down her neck and shoulders with my tongue and sucking one of her hardened nipples into my mouth. She gasped, putting one of her hands on the back of my head and leaning back on the counter with the other. I flicked my tongue over the small bud until it shined in the candlelight, and then I switched.
