Drake shook his head slightly, but when he swallowed, it told me otherwise. “Don’t you want dessert?” he asked. His voice was strained.

“I want to be dessert.” I winked at him, leaning back in my seat and crossing one leg over the other. His eyes were drawn to the newly exposed soft fleshy spot behind my knee.

“You’re impossible.” He half groaned, barely containing his composure.

When he stood up, I was giddy and the butterflies in my stomach danced. I reached behind me for my purse, ready to take his hand and follow him out when he kneeled instead. Drake took my hand, and I gasped. I looked around us, realizing we were starting to attract stares from the tables around ours.

“You turned my world upside-down three months and two weeks ago, and now I can’t imagine a world without you. You are everything to me. When you smile, I forget to breathe. If you cry, I would do anything to take away the pain.” He opened the velvet box he had been gripping in his hand, and my jaw dropped. There was a bright red oval-cut ruby surrounded by diamonds. “You said you’d do anything for me. So marry me, angel.”

I sniffled, the warm tears painting my cheeks and dripping onto my dress. The restaurant around us had grown quiet, and it felt like everyone else had disappeared. “I—I don’t know what to say.” I covered my mouth, my stare bouncing between him and the ring in his hand.

“Say yes.” Drake took the ring from the box and snapped it as if to answer for me.

I blinked, nodding excitedly. “Yes, obviously yes. A million times yes.”

He stood up, wrapping his arms around me and lifting me into them. When he kissed me, his mouth tasted sweet like him, but he was eager. His tongue darted past my lips, meeting mine, and I hummed.

He pulled away, sliding the ring onto my finger. I stared at it, wiggling the digit so the ring would catch the light from the chandeliers. It sparkled, the light reflecting off the beautiful red stone and the small white diamonds that framed it. I couldn’t look away.

“Do you like it?” Drake asked.

“It’s perfect.” I tore my eyes away from my hand to look at my fiancé. “How did you know rubies were my favorite?”

“I didn’t, but I learned they stand for everything you are—beauty, passion, strength. This one is rare, nearly flawless.” Drake held my hand, and the longer he stared at the ring in place, the wider he grinned. The man that had made fun of me for crystals and sage had looked up the meaning of this one. My heart raced dangerously fast. “Like you.”

I threw my arms around his neck, kissing him again when Ronan walked up behind us. “I hear congratulations are in order,” he interrupted.

I giggled, nodding. “I told you she’d say yes.” Drake winked at him.

Ronan shook his hand, pulling him in for a quick hug and a pat on the back before he hugged me. “You did. Good thing too. A woman like this could get any man she wanted, and somehow, she chose you.” He laughed, and Drake punched him lightly in the arm. “Glad you nailed her down before she found someone better!”

I wrapped my arms around Drake’s waist, pressing a quick peck to his lips. “I got the man I wanted.” I sighed happily when he looked down at me and smiled.

He pulled back, grabbing a bottle of champagne I hadn’t seen appear on the table. “We should have a toast,” Drake said, pulling at the cork.

I shook my head, putting my hand up a little too late to stop the cork from popping. “I can’t,” I said.

He paused and looked at me, scrunching his brow. “You what?”

“I said, I can’t.” I put my hand on my belly, and Drake set the bottle on the table harder than he had intended, causing the glasses to rattle.

“You… can’t?” He stepped towards me until his chest brushed against mine. “Why not?” His stare was intense, and my breath hitched in my throat.

“I was going to tell you after dinner,” I said. “I only found out this morning. It’s really early. I’m late so I tested.” I looked down to where my hand rested on my stomach.

“You’re pregnant.” Drake’s voice was gravelly and low, and his throat bobbed when he swallowed. When he clenched his jaw, the muscles in his neck rippled, and I swallowed nervously.

I nodded. “I’m pregnant.”

I squealed when Drake picked me up again, spinning me around and setting me back down gently. He held onto me, placing his hand on my belly and steadying me, and he rested his forehead against mine. “I can’t believe it.”

“You have to believe it. I still have the stick at home.” I paused. “All five of them.”

Drake looked like his heart was pounding as hard as mine. Was he nauseous too? I giggled when he sighed again. “I love you,” he said breathlessly.

“I love you too,” I whispered against his lips. “Now what was that about dessert?”
