“I haven’t seen him like this before... taken with someone as he is with you.”

I would have believed her, but not after yesterday.

“Thank you.”

I dab at the corners of my eyes and halt on the way to my room.

Don’t go upstairs.

Too late. My feet have a mind of their own.

The second floor ends with a room on the right. I am drawn to it. When I push the handle down, it’s locked. I return to my room and grab a few bobby pins before returning to the locked door. When the lock gives way, I take in a lungful of air and step inside.

It’s a small carpeted room, airy with a wide window, white furniture and walls. Next to the queen-sized bed are two nightstands and a blue sofa. On each nightstand rests a photo. I recognize Cameron’s mother—her facial similarities to Aurora are what catch my eye. She is blond with blue eyes, has elegant features, and a pale complexion. Cameron looks nothing like her with his brown hair and hazel eyes. Yet, they possess the same regal appearance.

I pick up the picture of the other person with trembling fingers. Jenny is beautiful, with big brown eyes, a pert nose, full lips, bronzed, flawless skin, and long black hair. Of course, I am not his type.

“I’m jealous of you. I’m sorry. You must have been a very strong woman who was dealt something no one should have to suffer. But you left him in pieces. He’s half a man, and I’m half-girl, half-woman, who has no idea what to do with someone like him. I don’t even know what to do with myself.”

I place the frame back and everything in me gets sucked in by a sadness I can’t escape. These are the two women he couldn’t save, and they have all of him.

I close the door behind me and come face to face with Marie. Finding her reaction comical, I burst into hysterical laughter.

“Why would you do that to yourself?” she asks.

“I had to know.”

“And now, with that knowledge, do you feel better?”

“It had nothing to do with feeling better.”

“Knowledge is insignificant in the face of the heart’s wishes. I see a spark of life in Cameron, and you are the one who awoke it in him. The past is just a shadow trailing after us, but it doesn’t have to define our future if we don’t allow it.”

I sidestep her and she adds, “None of them loved him the way he needs to be loved. His mother never tried harder, and Jenny was in no condition to love. Now, I know you are a smart woman. Who do you think he’ll love more?”

I freeze, completely taken aback by her words. Love.

Love would never be able to glue the shattered pieces of a painful past.

Leaving Marie standing there, I go to my gaming room. I am so distracted that I give up playing when Noah shouts at me for the second time. My mind is not in the game.

“What’s wrong? I don’t remember you ever playing this badly. Marriage problems already?”

His jaw sets, and his eyes pin me with accusation. I don’t need this shit.

“I’ll play better tomorrow.”

“I hope you do. If not, there’s no way we’re going to win the championship.”

Oh, yes. The annual championship in Las Vegas is now three weeks away.

“I’ll be there.”

His eyes widen, mouth dropping open. It’s sweet how his emotions are plastered all over his face.

Not like someone else I know who provokes headaches until I get a glimpse behind his walls.

“Wow, that’s . . . I . . .”
