“I need to be there. It’s time.” I need to break through the last bindings holding me captive. If I’m able to touch and be touched, then this is the final step to prove to myself I am in control. After so many years, escaping my prison has become my life’s goal. “Talk to you soon.”

“Yeah, sure.”

Seeing my teammates in person will be good since we’ve played for years together. I send my agent the demo of Bentaia, another game I’ve been working on. It is a virtual reality where you build your own world.

Like the last time, Scott calls me right away.

“This is more mainstream and we could market it with VR glasses to intensify the experience.”

“I want to be there. At the championship in three weeks.”

He gasps. “You do?”

Scott was the only one who accepted that I would never be available physically. I haven’t even met him in person. I signed my contract and scanned it back to him. We have video chats when needed—he has been so accommodating.

“You know there will be many people . . .”

“I know.”

“. . . very interested in you.”

“Are you trying to make me change my mind?”

“No, but I want you to feel comfortable.”

“I will be fine.”

When I hang up, I leave my desk with a smile. Putting a jacket on, I take the path to Alessandra’s house, hoping she’s there and can help me figure out what to do with Cameron.

I ring the bell, and their housekeeper leads me inside.

Alessandra’s with her daughter in the living room, sitting on the carpet and playing doctor. I pull my lips tight to keep from laughing at Leia’s confused expression when Alessandra tries to explain about aortas and heart chambers.

“Vio!” Leia sees me and jumps right into my arms. I pick her up with ease.

“Teach me to play what you play, will you?” she asks, sounding more interested in learning to play games than body functions.

“I guess she won’t be a doctor,” Alessandra says, sounding relieved.

“Are you free?” I ask.

“I have to leave in an hour.”

Whatever she sees on my face, she immediately turns to her daughter and says, “How about you show Auntie Violet what you can build?”

She wriggles out of my arms and rushes up the stairs. I pluck out my phone. “Can we exchange numbers?”

“Absolutely.”

I put Alessandra’s contact information into my phone and she adds me to the girls group chat.

Aurora is the first to reply. Hi there.

And Chiara is next. Finally.

I smile and Alessandra says, “There’s something on your mind.”

I nod, and she gestures to the couch. “We don’t have much time until she realizes the Lego box is too big for her to carry.”
