“Let’s go see.”

I wrap my legs around him. Maybe I am high on emotions, maybe I’m high on him, but I cup his face as his hands tighten around my waist.

“Thank you.”

“Anything you want.” His voice shakes and he lowers his face, kissing me with undiluted passion, backing me into the wall. I moan, digging my nails into his back as his tongue conquers my mouth. When he stops, we both gasp for air.

He adjusts his shorts. The air around us crackles with desire. Before I can give in, I climb out of the pool with a sway of my hips that has him groaning.

Picking up the cover up, I wrap myself in it and slip through the exterior door. I follow the cobblestone path that leads to the forest, finding the fawn.

I kneel before it. Big brown eyes stare at me and I whisper, “You’re going to be fine. I promise.”

Cameron finds us and he says, “I’ll call the vet.”

I stay with her, patting her on the back, and when the vet comes a bit later, I’ve already claimed it. On the horizon, the shape of the moon is visible while it’s still day and I decide to call her Luna.

The vet examines her while I squeeze Cameron’s hand. He pulls me to his chest and I wait with bated breath.

“The little one will be just fine. She’s a sweet little girl. She’s just a bit weak. She must have been abandoned.”

After giving us instructions on how to care for her, he leaves. I gather her in my arms. Cameron looks at us, warmth shining in his eyes. “I’ll tell Kieran we won’t be able to make it.”

We’re in the backyard with our baby deer on the grass in front of us when we hear laughter. The entire group rounds the corner.

Cato says, “Good, you’re good.”

“I told you so.” Alessandra eyes us, exasperated, until she sees the deer. She squeals, and everyone goes on high alert until they realize what she’s pointing to.

The women coo and fawn over the deer, and the men look at each other with baffled expressions.

“You’re on grill duty,” Kieran says.

Cameron groans and leaves with the guys while the girls and I sprawl across the lounge couch. The moment they are out of earshot, Chiara says, “We texted you, we even called.”

“Sorry, I forgot to reply. We were busy with Luna.”

“The poor thing, her family must’ve abandoned her,” Alessandra says, looking at Luna with glistening eyes.

She’s mine now, and I will love and protect her. I won’t abandon her.

By the time they leave, I can’t keep my eyes open as the fire flickers in the outdoor fireplace in front of me. Strong arms lift and carry me inside. Cameron kisses me goodnight on my forehead and sleep drags me under.

Waking up alone the next morning, I fall back with a groan. I wanted to wake up in his bed even though I know this is better—small steps. “Patience and trust.” I repeat the mantra all the way to my gaming room.

I open my laptop and see Noah’s DMs.

Have you seen this? He’s a fucking idiot for cheating on you.

Holding my breath, I open a link he sent with trembling fingers, only to see myself in pictures. There is a shot of Cameron and me leaning in, smiling at each other during that intimate moment with the dessert. The buzz in the media is all about us—how in love we seem and how long we’ve been together, especially since the news took them by surprise. Amid the speculation, my phone rings with a call from my mother.

“You make a beautiful couple. Soon, the press will find out who you are. We didn’t think this through. Reporters will start digging. I’m sorry,” she says, out of breath.

“It’s okay, Mom.”

“I miss you.”

“I have a lot to do this week, with the championship approaching. But I’ll come visit.”
