“It’s five in the morning, Cam.”

“She’s burning up, Alessandra.” My voice breaks.

“I’m on my way.”

A few minutes later, Alessandra flies through our bedroom door. Both she and Hayden step inside.

She touches her and confirms my suspicion. “Violet has a fever.”

She makes a quick call, speaking in terms I don’t understand but giving me an encouraging look. “It’s the flu. I’ll give her something, and she will be good in a few days.”

“It can be dangerous. Violet . . .”

I can’t lose her, and what if her immune system weakens and... No, I am not going there.

“We should take her to the hospital to be sure.”

“No, she hates hospitals.”

Alessandra makes a few calls while I pace.

Hayden squeezes my shoulder. “She is in the best hands.”

I look at Alessandra, knowing it’s true.

For the next two days, I turn into a walking zombie. Fuck colds. How can they make someone so weak? The hallucinations are the worst.

In her illness, Violet has repeatedly called my name. I haven’t left her side.

Two days later, her fever breaks. It’s only then that I calm down. She has barely eaten, and she’s been in and out of consciousness. Three nurses have come and gone, administering an IV. I’ve been a complete mess, even threatening the guys with bodily harm if they tell me to calm down again. Feeling her steady pulse is the only thing that eases me a bit.

“Cameron.” Her groggy voice pulls me from my thoughts.

“Hi, love.” I approach her, drop to my knees beside the bed, and take her hands in mine.

“What day is today?”

“Monday.”

She caresses my stubbled jaw and the bags under my eyes. I know I look unkempt, but fuck. These past few days were brutal.

“You’ve watched over me the entire time, haven’t you?”

“Of course. What else was I supposed to do?”

“Baby, it’s okay. You can go to work.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

She opens her mouth to disagree, but I silence her with a kiss.

In the end, I gave in, working from home. I have made so many compromises lately. I am not even counting because she’s worth every concession. My love for her goes so deep, it’s bottomless. I can’t breathe without her. And I am terrified.

Unable to focus on work, I leave my office to find her standing next to the bed.

“Bed, now.”

She pouts, and I swear this woman knows how to weaken me.
