Putting two fingers under her chin, I lift her face to me.

“Love, let’s make one thing clear. I need you. I want you. You are more than enough. With or without children.”

“Sure?”

“Don’t doubt it.”

She jumps in my arms and we hold each other tightly. I bury my face in her neck, inhaling her sweet scent, my life’s essence.

“But we can try,” she whispers. “I’d like that.”

“Whatever you want. And this is my vow to you.”

This woman of mine is perfect and there’s nothing she won’t get from me. I’d lay the world at her feet, gifting it to her. And if anyone ever dares to harm her, I’d burn it down and build a new one just for her.

Face beaming, she giggles, and the sound is like my guiding light.

“So just three?” she asks playfully and the mood lights up.

I nibble on her earlobe, biting lightly. “If it were up to me, we’d already be trying.”

“What happened to that guy I first met?”

“You happened.”

“Come here.” I do. I would follow her to the ends of the world and back. On repeat.

We spend an hour with Luna, and Violet says, “I will miss her when she leaves.”

I pull her into my arms.

“But she’s supposed to be outside.”

“What if we get a dog?”

She wraps her arms around me. “Sounds like a plan.”

She sneezes again, constricting my damn chest. Caressing her temples, she sighs. “I might have caught a cold.” Her voice trembles.

“It is just a cold. That’s it. Trust me. Nothing in this world will take you from me.”

She drops her head on my shoulder and says, “Take me to bed.”

I pick her up, loving the feel of her in my arms. It’s as if we instinctively know how to be with each other now. I set her down in the shower and undress her. Her eyelids droop with exhaustion, and I wash her hair and body. After I dry her with a towel, she puts on one of my shirts from the dressing room. Seeing her in my clothes makes me ecstatic. I could beat my chest like a Neanderthal.

I follow her and slip on a pair of boxers. “Move into my room with me, please.”

“The ‘please’ helps.”

“I’m desperate.”

“I’m willing.”

Chuckling, we climb into bed. I scroll through the K-dramas, and Violet cuddles next to me, sighing dreamingly. Not long after, her breathing evens out. With my arms crossed behind my neck, I grin, feeling content.

Waking up, I drag the sheet off me. The heat surrounding me is making me sweat. Violet winces next to me. When I touch her, she’s burning up. I shake her lightly, and she groans in pain.

Sheer panic twists around my ribs. My hands tremble as I grab my phone from my nightstand and dial Alessandra.
