“What does want have to do with fucking?”

We drive by a forested area, and a gated community opens on the right when it clears a bit. Thick trees and steel gates cover most of the property.

I roll my window down and inhale, needing to expel his heady scent. The fresh scent of pine and mist tickles my nostrils. The gates open, and I see men dressed in black, all armed, patrolling on every side, cameras following every move.

“They won’t bother you. But maybe the extra security will help you work up the nerve to go outside.”

“Maybe I will.”

“Maybe I hope you will. You look like vitamin D never hit your bones.”

“I’m fair skinned.”

“No, you’re pale skinned. There’s a difference.”

Must everything between us feel like a battle?

We drive down a paved alley until he parks in front of a regal mansion. The exterior boasts high columns, enormous windows, and a double staircase leading to an imposing front door. Trees and endless, perfectly mowed grass surround the lavish property. There are three other mansions in the distance.

“Alessandra and Hayden live in the first house on the right. The second is Cato and Chiara, and the last belongs to my sister and Kieran.”

“And you all live so close together?”

“We’re family.”

He steps out of the car, comes to my side, and opens the door for me.

“Thank you,” I whisper, hiding my smile, liking his gentlemanly act.

Inside the house, I gaze around the grand entrance, taking everything in, from the marble floors and wooden furniture to the ornate chandeliers topping the ceiling. Another curved double staircase leads to the second floor. The house is old refinement mixed with lavish luxury.

An older woman approaches me, and I cringe.

“Hello, my dear. Welcome. I’m Marie.”

“Hello. I’m Violet.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

She offers us a nod, and she departs. Cameron points toward the staircase. I follow, wondering when the realization of this major change will happen. With shaky legs, I take the carpeted stairs. Cameron stops on the first floor and stands in the middle of the hallway.

“I am in the left wing.”

That’s good. A defined border will preserve the distance I need.

We turn right. He opens a door in the middle of the wing. A spacious room with a wooden queen-sized bed greets me. I smile at the violet curtains hanging over the large window. There is a duvet to match. I like this room and its antique style.

My belongings have been arranged inside the walk-in closet. On the other side of the room is an en suite bathroom, done completely in marble. An impressive shower in black and gold accents and an oval bathtub are in the middle of the room. A large mirror hangs above the pristine white double vanity.

I return to the room. His eyes on me. I hate uncertainty. I hate everything about this.

I glance at the door; everything in me pushes me to leave this foreign place. Cameron is standing in front of it, keeping me trapped. His presence fills the room. He looks intently at the side of my face, disconcerting me.

“I’d say you’re not allowed to leave the perimeter alone, but we both know that won’t happen anyway.”

I hate his smug expression, that sarcasm he wields with dexterity. Rebellion strikes me, driving me to prove that he underestimates me.
