“You sure you want to play that game with me?”

“What if I did?”

He stalks toward me. Bravery drives me, and I don’t move.

His chest brushes against mine, setting my sensitive skin aflame. He braces his palms against the wall behind me. My breath turns erratic at his nearness, yet I remain in place.

“Brave, aren’t we?” His face lowers to mine, his eyes searching mine, twisting my insides, molding them as if they were clay.

“Cameron?” I don’t know what I’m asking of him, but this torment is agonizing. His cheek caresses mine—a simple, innocent touch that ignites a fire in my belly.

He pushes himself off me, leaving me openmouthed and needy.

He storms away, shutting the door behind him.

I collapse on the windowsill. What was that?

I should forget this episode happened. Instead, I go downstairs, following the light from under his office door. My self-preservation is more dead than alive as I open the door an inch, peeking inside. He has his hands over his face, and a drink sits on his desk.

Something must’ve happened to him today. There is something else past his appearance. His moods reflect the emotions that rule him.

I step inside, and he snaps his head toward me, his eyebrows drawing together.

I can’t believe I am here either.

Taking his glass off his desk, I swirl the content before taking a sip. Coughing and spurting, I struggle to catch my breath.

Cameron tries to suppress a smile in vain.

“Why would anyone drink this?”

“Because it’s strong, that’s why.”

“Why do you need it tonight?”

He leans back in his chair and crosses his arms behind his neck, his intense gaze fixed on me. “Why do you?”

Will things between us always be quid pro quo? I should leave. Instead, I round his desk and prop my hip against it. I don’t know what to make of myself anymore. I am confused most of the time, terrified and excited, and it’s all mixed up in a potent cocktail, making me drunk.

“Today, I gave up trying.”

“Why?”

“It’s hard.”

“Life is hard.”

“I thought you rule life, not the other way around.”

Cameron smiles, and it’s genuine, which instantly puts me at ease.

I wait, hoping he’ll say more. If he doesn’t answer, I will never give in a second time.

“You’ll never be prepared for either my answers or the demons that have me in their grip.”

“You call me weak.”

“I don’t think it has anything to do with weakness. But I am sure you could never come to terms with someone like me, leaving us at an impasse.”
