I blush. “Thank you.”

“You’re creative.”

“Gamers usually are.”

“You create games as well?”

“Yes, I’m working on my third one.”

“I’m sure Cam didn’t expect you to be...” She pauses, picking up a necklace. My eyes are glued to a pair of black diamond earrings. “Different, but so refreshing.”

“Thank you, I guess.”

“I’m known for reacting and for not having a filter. I want you to feel okay, so if I step out of line, please tell me.”

Her daughter bounces inside.

“You know you’re not allowed in here,” Chiara tells her.

“Please, Mommy. I won’t touch anything.”

Chiara whispers to me, “Five seconds.”

As I show her the next image, her daughter touches a spiky bracelet.

“Out.”

“You’re no fun.”

“I’m your mother. Fun is not in the description.”

“Daddy is,” Celia says, glaring at her mother, who mumbles for patience.

“Now.”

Celia huffs and storms away.

I chuckle. “She is something else.”

“She is, but neither I nor Cato expected differently. We had little hope for a behaved child. She’s ours.”

I giggle and send her the files via email. She forwards my designs to her team. “Thank you for your help.”

“It’s also for me, you know. Getting out of the house and all.”

“How are you? Honestly, now?”

“I freak out less every day.”

“I can’t imagine, but I guess we learn to adapt, don’t we?”

Her expression is at ease, but she must see my confusion. “I gave up my freedom when I chose to be with Cato. He is worth it.” She smiles so brightly and shrugs.“ That’s love.”

I watch her pick up the pair of black diamond earrings.

She offers them to me, and I raise my hands to decline. “I can’t accept that.”

“You can. These were the only things that caught your eye.”
