“How much?”

“It’s a gift.”

I really want them. And her being so generous to gift them to me gives me the last push. I extend my hands and she places them on my leather gloves. I peel them off without a second thought, feeling the sleek, cold gems in my palms. I put on the earrings, and she brings me a mirror. A bright smile parts my lips when I see my reflection.

“I would hug you, but then I might have to run in the first bathroom and clean myself with bleach.”

Chiara throws her head back and laughs. “Bleach! I wouldn’t even mind.”

“Why?”

“My husband. He’s a mafia boss.”

She sees my surprise. “You know the guys lead a Syndicate, right?”

I shake my head.

“Fuck . . . do I tell you? But then you might freak out . . .”

“Tell me.”

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you. If Cameron kills me for this, it’s on you. The guys run the underworld. Behind their polished exteriors are men who run a criminal organization. And that includes violence if needed. Imagine the worst, like killing, and then add some more.”

My mouth opens and closes. I knew there was more to him, but I wasn’t expecting this. A mayor who is a killer. What code of ethics is that? No wonder I get that dangerous vibe from all four men. But I get the bigger picture now and strangely, it doesn’t surprise me, as I already had a hunch. Of course, his political persona would be a front. And of course, I have to find it fascinating because it’s so different than the norm. But there’s a vast difference between violence online and knowing someone does that in real life.

“So, what do you think about his other job now?”

“I’m . . . I don’t know . . . shocked yet not surprised.”

We giggle.

“You’re not at all what I expected you to be.”

I need to know more. I need more insight into Cameron.

“Believe me, nothing will prepare you for it. I thought I knew all about this world, and still it gets difficult at times. But if Aurora managed to adjust, and Alessandra, who’s out there saving lives, so can you.”

Voices erupt from the hallway. Alessandra and Aurora stagger inside the studio, carrying a bottle of champagne.

“What are you celebrating?” Chiara asks.

“Finished a double shift. Lost one patient, saved two.”

That’s a reason to celebrate? They notice me and stop in their tracks, looking at each other cautiously.

“You’re making her uncomfortable. Violet’s tougher than she looks.”

Chiara is unapologetic and I like her assertive personality. I can’t believe I feel more at ease with her than with the other women who radiate empathy and sympathy.

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not. They want to counteract their husbands’ deeds. Newsflash, you can’t.”

Alessandra and Aurora exchange another look.

“How is Cam?” Alessandra asks.

“I’m sure you know better than me.” Alessandra pales, an apology on her lips.
