“Daddy said you missed playing with me.”

That asshole sent Leia to me so he can fuck his wife. Typical.

“Let’s go outside.” I don’t want my niece to be traumatized for the second time in just days.

We go to the playground, and I push her in the swing. Holding the chains, she asks, “When does Vio come back?”

“Today, Princess.”

If I have to drag her back, I will. Her place is here with me. With us.

“She’s a hero, like my mom.”

“Yes, she is. Were you afraid?”

She nods her small head and I squat in front of her. “Fear keeps us alive. So, when your tummy says something is not good, you don’t do it.”

“I told her that, but she doesn’t listen.”

Celia got her stubbornness from both of her parents. I am not looking forward to her teenage years.

Cato walks over, holding his daughter to his chest. He knows, which means he will never let her out of his sight again. I can feel the tension radiating off him from the other side of the pavement.

“Daddy, I want to play,” Celia says.

“Daddy missed you.”

“I missed you too, but I want to play.” He places her down with utmost care. She hugs his leg and says, “I told you, Daddy, nothing happens to me.”

She runs toward the slide while Cato watches her with hawk eyes as he reaches me.

“Where is Violet?” he asks.

“I’ll pick her up later.”

“I owe her my life.”

I know what he means and hope it won’t come to that.

“How are you?”

We sit on the edge of the sandy playground and Cato cracks his neck. “I come back, can’t wait to see my kid and fuck my wife. Instead, Chiara’s crying her eyes out, talking about being a terrible mother.” Why do women blame themselves when they would literally die for their kids?

“I could have lost them both. And for fucking what? Those assholes will regret every second of their pathetic lives.”

I squeeze his shoulder, and we watch the girls play.

“Kids hurt themselves.”

“Get yourself a kid and then you’ll see, man. Those little people rule your life. There is no life without them. The thought of that... Nothing in this world has the same power.”

“I have to get my runaway woman back.”

“Cut her some slack and maybe you should be there for her more.”

“You don’t get it.”

“I get it, I fucking do. But life with Chiara is so damn worth it. Without her, without them, my life would have been meaningless. You take it because that’s the only thread you have to hold on to your humanity.”
