I have to give Violet more. I want that. If she can be brave, I owe it to her and myself to do the same. I’ll find out if it’s worth taking the risk.

Determination pumps through my veins as I get in my car. I park the car in the driveway when I reach the governor’s mansion. My heart fills up all the space in my chest, and it beats again when I see Violet. She’s chasing after her little sister in the garden with soap bubbles, both of them grinning. I give them some time and go inside the house. Her parents are looking out the window, arms wrapped around each other. I clear my throat and they turn around.

“You’re here,” Campbell says, and I saunter over to them.

“I’m here to take Violet back.”

“That’s up to her,” Bridget says and looks back out the window. They are sorely mistaken if they think I’m leaving their house without my wife. Marriage in my world means a lifetime commitment.

“Violet is better. I know it’s because of you, but I don’t know if she doesn’t deserve someone who isn’t being pulled in two different directions like you,” says Campbell. It’s too fucking late for second guesses. Now, he grows a fucking conscience? Where was it when he offered her to me on a silver platter without taking our preferences into consideration? He can go fuck himself. I’m taking back what’s mine.

“Let’s get one thing straight. Violet is my wife. Nothing and no one can or will change that. Not even death.” I’m out of there before they can piss me off even more, the sounds of their gasps following me.

Violet and Serena are on a bench in the garden, pressed together and giggling while eating cookies. I approach them from behind and fuck if I’m not hard when she senses me. It’s in her pulse quickening and in her spine stiffening.

“Violet,” I say, seduction rolling from my tongue. She spears me with an angry look.

Serena pouts when she sees me. “Do you have to go?”

I crouch in front of her, smiling. “Yes, but she can visit you whenever she wants, and the same goes for you.”

“She can speak for herself.”

My gaze snaps to Violet. “She should already be in the car.”

She sticks up the tip of her nose. “Maybe she doesn’t want to go.”

“Maybe she forgot who she is married to.”

Watching our interaction, Serena’s head bounces back and forth like a ball in a ping-pong match.

“Can you give us a few minutes?” I ask through a set jaw. I’m one pleasantry away from losing my shit. With a nod, Serena leaves, and I take her seat.

Violet crosses her arms over her chest. “I thought you forgot about me.”

“I can do a lot of things. Forgetting about you is not one of them.”

She looks straight into my eyes, and her body loses a bit of tension.

I place a hand on hers, interlacing our fingers and squeezing lightly. “Thank you for saving Celia.”

“Is that why you’re here?” she asks, sounding disappointed.

Incapable of not touching her, I brush my knuckles over her cheek. “No, I’m here to bring you home.”

“This is my home,” she whispers, though she doesn’t stop me from touching her.

“No, it’s not. It’s the home you left to finally start living your life.”

“So sure of yourself . . .”

“I am stating facts, wife. But I had an awful week and am about to lose it.”

“And what can I do?”

“A lot crosses my mind, but you could start by putting your pretty ass in my car. We have a family dinner tonight.”

“Pretty?”
