“Fucking gorgeous. I’m salivating.”

She giggles. Those sounds are like an angel’s choir as I step toward heaven. I’m pretty sure I won’t even get to see if it exists. It hits me full force how much I’ve missed her.

“I want you to come with me, but if I have to resort to kidnapping, I will.”

She sighs. “You’re insufferable.”

I need you. I want you. I feel like I breathe easier with you next to me.

“Let’s go,” I say instead of my thoughts. I stand up and offer her a hand. She takes it. The fact that she gives in and doesn’t tell me to fuck off relieves me.

When she says her goodbyes in the foyer, her parents have the audacity to tell her she can stay. She’s not going to. I know Violet can sense how close I am to the edge. She shrugs instead. “You made a deal.”

“But . . .”

“I’m fine, mom. I’ll see you in a few days.”

It’s monumental when she hugs them, and my heart expands. This woman is a true inspiration. My admiration for her is boundless.

Her sister runs down the stairs and says, “You’re leaving?”

Violet crouches in front of her. “Yes, but you can come visit me, okay?”

“Okay,” she says, jumping into Violet’s arms for a hug. I’m glad I am leaning against the wall. She never ceases to amaze me.

As we settle in the car and I drive away, I ask, “What changed?”

“If I can touch you and the other kids, then my family... they should have been the first.”

I waggle my brows at her. “Well, you can’t say no to me. Are you weak for me, wife?”

She rolls her eyes, pretending to be annoyed. “I prefer when you’d forgotten about me.”

“Are you bitter?”

She scalds me with a heated look. “And I would never forget about you, so that we’re clear.”

I missed you too. Fuck, how I’ve missed the challenges between us. The push and pull. “I’ll spend more time at home from now on.”

She pats her chest in mock appreciation. “Oh, what an honor.”

“I’m sorry I neglected you.”

“I have never met someone with a bigger ego than you.”

“And you never will because you’re mine. For a lifetime and more.”

“The deal between us is off.”

“Since when?”

Hurt twists her face. Fuck, I really fucked up.

“Since I realized I don’t need you to conquer my fears.”

“Not interested in my confessions?”

Crossing her arms in front of her chest, she lifts her nose defiantly. “Not in the slightest.”
