“No problem. I keep a set in my trunk.”

After he retrieves the tools from his trunk, both guys get started on taking the flat tire off and putting the spare one on.

The passenger of the other car walks closer to Mara when he is no longer needed. “So, where are you two headed?”

Mara leans in close to the guy. “Back to the university. Well, we were going to stop at the cafe first for a heavy dose of caffeine and sugar.”

His eyes light up and his grin stretches wider. “We go to the same school. That cafe is legendary.”

Sparks fly between Mara and this other guy.

Maybe something will come of this accident.

I try to make small talk with the driver as Mara and her new love interest walk to the other side of the car.

“So, what are you majoring in?”

He mumbles, “Business and finance.”

His tone is serious, like he doesn’t want to talk about school.

He didn’t ask what I was majoring in or wanting to study.

Or maybe he doesn’t want to talk to me.

He jumps up from his squat, startling me. “All done. You two are good to go. Just make sure you don’t drive on this for too long.”

Mara comes to look at the new tire. “Thank you so much for helping us.”

“No problem.” He gestures to his friend. “Let’s go. We still have to get supplies for the party tonight.”

They wait for Mara and me to get in the car and drive off before passing us.

I turn to Mara. “So, did you get his number?”

“What?”

“The guy that you were flirting with.”

Her cheeks blush. “Why would I get his number?”

Is she serious? Or is she just oblivious to how close they were standing next to one another?

“Because it’s as clear as day that the two of you were into each other. There was a very palpable vibe.”

“Hmm, really? So, it was noticeable?”

“Very, but it could be because I’m your best friend and notice things about you that other people usually don’t.”

“Well, I did get his number, and he invited me to the party he’s throwing tonight.

My smile matches hers. “Mara, that’s great!”

“Yeah, but-” Her smile disappears. “-I don’t want to leave you home alone tonight on our first day back.”

I’m the one that left her at her parent’s house for a week so I could enjoy the Cape. “Pfft. I’ll be fine. Hopefully, I’ll be busy talking with Damien.”

She raises an eyebrow. “Talking?”
