I glance out the passenger window at the acres of farmland. “Uh, yeah. Talking.”

She turns her head to look at me and narrows her eyes. “Uh, huh. Sure.”

I try to keep my smile from showing. “You don’t think Damien and I will talk tonight?”

“If what you told me about spring break is true, then I hope the two of you are going to be doing a lot more than just talking tonight.”

My heart beats faster as my insides turn to goo. “Me too.”

We giggle like schoolgirls as Mara pulls into the familiar parking lot.

She lets out a long sigh. “I’m so happy we finally made it to the cafe. It took way longer than it should have, though. Stupid tire.”

I close my door behind me as she locks the car with the keypad. “Yeah, but it could have been a lot longer if we didn’t have help.”

We walk through the front doors of the cafe, and I inhale the rich aromas of the coffees and baked goods that are popular all time of day.

Mara flings herself into my side and lays her head on my shoulder for a moment. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the cafe this backed up. Why did everyone choose today of all days to come here?”

“Yeah, why are there so many people here this evening? Did everyone get sick and tired of the cafeteria at the same time?”

Not that the cafeteria has bad food or anything.

Actually, they have really fresh and delicious food, but it’s located on the opposite side of the campus from my dorm suite, so it’s usually easier to grab food from the cafe or just cook at home.

“Maybe word got out about their awesome ice coffees.”

“Maybe, or people want coffee and cupcakes instead of a well-balanced, healthy meal.”

Her laugh has others nearby joining in.

“It would be hard to pass up their raspberry filled vanilla cupcakes with freshly made buttercream icing.”

My mouth waters at the mention of the confectionary treat.

“Shh!” Mara hushes me before adding, “There won’t be any left if you tell our secrets.”

I lower my voice and say, “I told you-know-who about them. I wonder if he’s tried one yet.”

She leans closer, so no one can hear. “Now is your chance to ask him. He’s sitting in the corner. Just right over there.”

She nods her head to the left side of the cafe that is behind me.

I quickly turn around and see him focused on his laptop with a cup of coffee sitting in the center of the table.

“Go talk to him while you have a chance,” Mara instructs. “I’ll save your spot, or order for you if you don’t make it back in time.”

In a hushed tone, I say, “Thank you.”

I casually walk over to his table in the cafe's corner and clear my throat to get his attention.

He looks up, annoyed that someone is interrupting him while he is working. It only takes a few seconds for his gaze to turn to pure shock.

I wait for him to say something, but he doesn’t. He looks back at his computer screen.

Is he going to ignore me?

“Hey.” I say awkwardly.
