Ugh. Even her voice sounds perfect.

Is this who I have to compete with in order to get a few minutes of Damien’s time?

Is this why he never told me about his home life?

Because he has someone here.

I don’t need him to say anything, because based on the way he’s acting, I already know the answer to my unspoken questions.

If he isn’t already in a relationship with her, then he will be soon, or he already has been, and she isn’t over him yet.

Both scenarios don’t leave room for me and my feelings.

Chapter Five

Upon closer look at the mystery woman, I know I have seen her before, but can’t pinpoint where exactly.

It has to be somewhere around campus since she is meeting with Damien.

“No, not at all.” Damien says abruptly.

Of course, he wouldn’t want word to get out that he had a fling with a student over spring break. Even if we didn’t know I was about to be his student, our situation is still complicated.

“Well, I’ll leave you two alone. Thank you for the information. I guess I’ll see you around, professor.”

I turn around and head back to Mara, who is waiting at the counter for them to finish making our drinks.

“How did it go?” She whispers as she looks towards Damien. “Who the hell is that?”

She is just as surprised as I was a few moments ago.

I mumble as my mood quickly goes south. “She’s someone he has a meeting with. An old friend, apparently. Can I wait for you outside?”

“Sure. I’ll be right out as soon as I get our food and drinks.” She says sympathetically.

I make my way through the crowd of students and head outside to breathe in the fresh air.

Taking a chance, I let my gaze wander towards his table in the corner where he is already deep into a conversation with her.

She is tall, lean, and blonde. Well, technically a fake blonde, since her roots are as dark as mine.

If I had to pick someone for him, she seems like she would be his perfect type.

She is the total opposite of my average height and way too curvy body.

Mara steps outside and follows my gaze to Damien’s table and the blonde mystery woman he is talking to. She lets out a loud scoff.

“Girl, do not compare yourself to her. You are the bomb, and he literally told you last night that he loves you.”

“I love my curves, no doubt about it, but how can he not attempt to speak to me after finding out we live in the same town and go to the same school? Well, he teaches here and I attend school here.”

She hands me my cup of coffee and a small bag with my cupcake inside. “I don’t know. Maybe he is still wrapping his head around things. You know how slow men are at processing their emotions.”

She has a point there. My dad always took days to process things that my mom told him.

“Do you know who she is? I feel like I’ve seen her before, but I don’t remember when or where I have. It has to be somewhere here. Is she another teacher, or does she work in the office?”

Mara only has to think for a moment. “Wasn’t she the sub for the Pilates teacher last year? You know, the one that went into labor in the middle of Jake’s class?”
