His voice is quiet, reminding me of Jake.

Turning to look at him, I offer him a polite smile and say, “No, I came with my best friend.”

He looks around before saying, “It looks like she ditched you.”

His voice might remind me of Jake, but as far as I can tell, the two of them are nothing alike.

Jake is quiet, geeky, and likes to stay home alone. This guy has his hair bleached and spiked, like it’s 2002. He’s wearing a collared short-sleeve shirt and a pair of khaki pants.

A little dressed up for a frat party.

“She didn’t ditch me.”

He gestures to the empty couches around us. “Then where is she?”

Why does it matter where she is?

Is he looking for a threesome?

She’d laugh at that because this wouldn’t be the first time we were propositioned to share a guy.

“She’s talking with a friend.”

He scoots closer to me. Our legs are almost touching and all I want to do is push him away or learn how to crawl up the wall.

“So,” He stretches his arm behind me like a cheesy romantic comedy movie. “What's your name?”

If I ignore him, will he keep asking, or will he give up and walk away?

I mumble. “Shae.”

“Oh, like the lotion?”

Is he serious right now?

“Uh, yeah. Just like the lotion.”

“I love that lotion. It slides really easily and-”

He stops talking when I let out a loud gasp. I can picture what he was about to say. Who in their right mind would discuss lotion and their extra-curricular activities with someone they just met?

He clears his throat. “Anyway, how about you and I go somewhere more private and get to know one another?”

No, thanks. That’s the last thing I want to do.

What I really want to do is leave, but I can’t text Mara and ask her to come save me because she is with her date.

I try to come up with an excuse. “I should probably go look for my friend, though.”

“I’m sure she will come find you when she’s done with her conversation.”

I guess I can deal with this guy for a few more minutes and if all else fails, I’ll just get up and leave.

He leans towards me. “So, are you also a senior?”

“Yep, and I’m assuming you are as well.”

“Yeah. My parents promised me the newest Ferrari with a custom paint job once I graduate.”
