“I was just trying to be a good roommate. Plus, you and him are always at each other’s throats. It's nice to have some peace in the suite every now and then.”

“Well, you can say goodbye to the peace now. You know how guys get when they are rejected. I’d expect a lot more anger and awkwardness. But I’ve had enough about Jake. Have you talked to Damien today about your relationship?”

Taking a deep breath, I whisper, “No. To be honest, I don’t know if Damien and I are even in a relationship. Things are so hot and cold with him right now. I can’t even get him to answer a call or text, let alone D-T-R.”

Mara turns her body in the chair to face me. She gives my arm a supportive squeeze.

“I hate to be the one to say this because I love you, but it’s clear as day that he has no interest in you. He doesn’t want a relationship and apparently there is more going on with Miss Blonde.”

When I shake my head, she scoffs.

“Be honest with yourself. There has to be more to the story than he is telling you. She has to be more than just an old friend for him to pull a complete one-eighty on you in less than twenty-four hours.”

She does have a point.

“Maybe I am just afraid to face the music, so to speak, and admit that what we had over vacation is long gone. His actions are all over the place.”

There’s no other way to describe his actions.

“He leaves me hopeful that we have a real chance and then the next moment, he’s going cold turkey and ignoring me. I mean, if he wasn't interested in a relationship, then why would he kiss me? Clearly, he still wants me.”

Of course, I didn’t tell Mara that we had sex in his classroom before the party, she would be extremely pissed that he is treating me this way.

Giving me a sympathetic look, she says, “Wanting you and wanting a relationship with you are two different things. You could be sexually attracted to someone and not want to have a relationship with them.”

Wow, she is being really blunt right now, and while her words hurt and make me want to cry, I know she only wants what’s best for me.

She rolls her eyes as she has an internal thought.

“I think it’s awfully wrong for him to claim he loves you and wants to resume what you two had going on, but then he acts like you don’t exist despite the fact that you are in his class two days a week!”

She leaps to her feet, pushing the chair against the siding of the house, and begins pacing back and forth on the front porch.

When she has her back to me, I say, “Is this supposed to make me feel better about hurting Jake?”

I wait until she turns around and glares at me to give her a giant grin.

Chuckling, I continue, “I’m just kidding. There’s no need for you to get riled up. It is what it is. The future of our relationship is in his hands. There’s nothing more I can do.”

I shrug to keep my emotions at bay. “My only concern right now should be focusing on school, graduation, and my future. I still don’t have a typed resume or potential businesses to apply to and graduation is right around the corner.”

I lean my head back and close my eyes, listening to the sounds of college parties happening around campus. Everyone is having a great time tonight, except this dorm suite.

That’s not unusual for this suite, but we are usually peaceful and more friendly.

“That’s a good plan. I still need to work on my resume and applications. How about we have a best friend date tomorrow and help each other with them?”

“That would be amazing. Thank you.”

We will be productive towards our futures and keep my mind off the situation with Jake and my complicated relationship with Damien.

“And I’ll try to get my mom’s help with places that we can apply to. Do you need help getting inside?” Her voice is low, but I can still hear her anger towards Damien.

“No, I’ll be fine out here. I want to enjoy the peace and quiet for a little while longer. Plus, I’ve gotten pretty damn good at hobbling wherever I need to go.”

Being in the room next to Jake will make it hard for me to relax right now, but Mara doesn’t need to worry about me when she has her own life and future to worry about.

“Okay, well, if you need me, you know where to find me. I’ll be up for several more hours.” Mara gently closes the door behind her, leaving me alone in the night's quietness.
