She leans closer to look at my pupils.

“I’ll tell you about my good mood after you tell me about your date.” I hobble over to her bed as she closes her door.

“Girl, it was so amazing! He is completely unexpected. So smart and caring, but he knows how to make me laugh. We only hung out and kissed a few times, but we talked like we have known each other for years.”

Her smile is bigger than I have seen in such a long time.

“I am so happy for you. You totally deserve this. And as your best friend, I will give you some time before I demand to know who he is. That way, the two of you can enjoy this honeymoon new love phase.”

She raises her eyebrow and cocks her head a little. “Really? I figured you would be bursting at the seams to know who he is.”

I roll my eyes. “Well, of course, I want to know who he is, but I’m not impatient like you.”

She scoffs and shrugs. “What can I say? I’m one of a kind.”

That’s the fucking truth.

“No truer words have been spoken.”

She gasps and pretends to be hurt. “Hey! Just for that, I’m never going to tell you. I’ll keep him a secret and you’ll be the last one to find out.”

“How will you keep him a secret? You know your mom would tell me all about him. Hell, she’ll probably tell the entire world as soon as she finds out that you are dating someone.”

Mara thinks for a minute. “Well, then no one will find out until my wedding day.”

We laugh at our silly antics like we have many times before.

When my laughter subsides, I say, “I’m impressed. You actually mentioned your wedding day without wanting to gag.”

“That’s because I’m just joking with you and you aren’t pushing for me to settle down right after graduation.”

“I’d never push you. Even if you were seventy and still unwed, I’d support you.”

And that’s the truth. I’ll support any and all of Mara’s quirky, rash, and dumb decisions.

“Good, because I would do the same for you.”

She gives me a tight hug before leaning away. “Now that you know about my date, it’s your turn. When I left you just a little bit ago, you were not this happy. What, or who, put you in such a good mood?”

She stares at me, waiting for me to spill the tea.

“Well…” I start before I stop.

How much should I share with her?

If I share with her all of tonight’s conversation with Damien, then I’ll have to tell her about the night in his classroom.

“To make a long story short, Damien stopped by.”

Her eyes widen as her mouth falls open. “What? When?”

“Practically as soon as you came inside.”

Her smile turns into a frown. “He didn’t stay long enough for the two of you to have a thorough conversation.”

“We said plenty to one another.”

She rolls her eyes. “More like you two kissed plenty.”
