“We did talk.”

She scoffs like she doesn’t believe me. “So, you’re telling me you didn’t kiss him?”

“Well, no, because that would be a lie, but we really did talk.”

“And what did the two of you talk about in just a few minutes? Was it about the weather?”

“No. He told me he loves me and cares about me. This is new to him and he’s trying to process everything. He also told me he had dinner with the Dean tonight and couldn’t stay long.”

“Well, that’s progress, at least. Maybe there’s hope for the two of you after all.”

I grin and say, “True love does win in the end.”

A loud growl comes through the shared wall to Jake’s room before a door slams. The entire suite shakes as Jake punches the wall.

Chapter Eleven

Just like a child growing up and realizing fairytales don’t exist, I, too, need to grow up and accept that real life isn’t a romantic fairytale.

It doesn’t matter if what you feel is true love. In the end, both people have to want the relationship to work out for it to have a happy ending.

And like a dream while you are sleeping, eventually, you have to wake up and face reality.

Today is my wake-up call.

Damien isn’t in the classroom when Mara and I arrive.

It’s not like him to be late for class.

He is always here first thing in the morning, stretching and meditating.

As if sensing my train of thoughts, Mara says, “He could just be running late.”

I shake my head back and forth. “Not likely, especially since he didn’t respond to my text this morning.”

Mara looks at me sympathetically. “I don’t want to say this-”

Knowing where she is going with that statement, I beg, “Then don’t say it. Please. I know I need to accept the fact that this is how he is, but I can’t. Not right now.”

“It’s just-” She sighs. “He’s been so hot and cold towards you and after the kiss and everything, well kisses, I’m not surprised. He’s acting like a two-year-old.”

My eyes widen with shock. I’m used to her being blunt and speaking her mind, but I was not prepared for this truth.

Especially so soon after Damien started opening up to me.

But I can’t fault her for speaking her mind. The truth is, if a guy was acting like this to her, I would say something, too.

She takes a step closer to me. “Look, I don’t want to upset you, but I care about you. You are my best friend, and I will always have your back. And right now, it is my duty as your best friend to tell you he sucks and is leading you on.”

She takes a sip of her water, giving me a chance to cut in.

“Great. Thanks.” I reply sarcastically.

This isn’t the wake-up call I wanted, but it may be what I need.

Her face scrunches up and shoots me a friendly glare. “If you’d let me continue, you wouldn’t jump to conclusions. Today’s situation is different. I believe he is just running late today. You just need to calm down and take a deep breath.”

Heels click on the floor, bringing every set of eyes to the doorway. I let out a loud frustrated groan as I see who it is.
