Jake’s voice is deceivingly convincing, like he does not know what is going on. “Maybe you should drop it, Mara. Can’t you see what you are doing to her?”

Mara spins around and yells at Jake. “Me? I’m not the one who did this to her. I’m her best friend, and I need to know what happened.”

Jake stands a little straighter and squares his shoulders, ready for this fight like he was expecting it.

“No, you don’t need to know what happened. That is just you being your typical nosy self. She already said that she doesn’t want to talk about it, but you keep pushing. That doesn’t seem very friend-like to me.”

“You want to lecture me about being a friend?” Mara lets go of me and marches towards the kitchen.

I speak to Mara’s back. “Please, Mara, don’t fight. It isn’t worth it.”

“This fight has been brewing all year, but I never said anything for the sake of our friendship, but it’s time I speak my mind. Especially after the fight you two had on the front porch.” Mara says through gritted teeth.

He smirks. “Oh, so you know about that argument?”

His question has anger welling up in me. Of course, she knew, and he knew she knew because of the cameras.

Mara scoffs like she can’t believe he just asked her that. “Of course, I knew. Shaela is my best friend.”

Her comment has me nodding my head. Mara and I don’t keep secrets, at least we haven’t for a very long time. Today is the first day in many years.

Since he has pissed me off beyond my imagination, I decide to add fuel to her fire and tell her something he confessed to me today.

Opening my bedroom door, I pause in the doorway. “Oh, hey, Mara? Jake had cameras installed at the beginning of the year, so he already knew we talked about the big fight.”

I shrug as he shoots daggers at me.

If I can’t have a good evening, neither can he. He never said I couldn’t talk about the cameras, just not the truth about my relationship. Plus, what else can he do to ruin my life?

She turns to look at me before turning back to look at Jake.

Her eyes get big and round as she processes what I just told her. “HE WHAT?”

Jake holds his hands up innocently. “They were for security reasons.”

I might not have said or done anything at the time, but I can promise him that Mara will. She loves her privacy and won’t react as calmly as I did.

Walking into my bedroom, I close my door behind me and click the lock in place. While they argue and figure out the camera situation, I can mourn the loss of my relationship with Damien.

Putting my bag down, I listen to what happens next.

“You’ve been spying on us?” Mara’s voice booms as she imagines the worst, like I did.

“N-no!” Jake stutters.

Coward.

Mara doesn’t speak for a moment, and I think the fight is over, but she doesn’t disappoint.

“Well, that’s what it sounds like. How do you think the Dean will react when he finds out that you, a male student with female roommates, had cameras without their knowledge? How do you think this will look if the local news station found out?”

Mara’s revelations have me also considering those outcomes.

Now that I have broken things off with Damien and made it to where he will never speak to me again, there’s nothing stopping me from egging Mara on.

Of course, Jake can still go to the dean and get Damien fired for our relationship and I’d feel guilty as hell if I cost Damien his job, but that doesn’t stop Mara from giving him hell.

I just have to make sure she doesn’t tell the authorities. An idea comes to mind.
