Rushing back out to the common area, I say, “Jake, why don’t you show us where the cameras are and disconnect them? Mara can keep them locked in her room until graduation day when you can have them back.”

Mara huffs. “No way. This guy is a creep, and you are once again sticking up for him.”

I know how it appears, but I couldn’t live with myself if Jake went to the dean with the pictures of my relationship.

“I get how you feel. Trust me, I do. I want nothing more than to have Jake kicked out of school, but we can handle this ourselves, since we are so close to graduation. First, let’s see where the cameras are so we can determine if we need to get others involved.”

Jake gives me a ‘you better not’ look before walking to the front door.

Walking onto the concrete patio, he points to the upper corner where we have hanging plants.

Mara and I follow to look at what he’s pointing at. Squinting to look in the corner, I see a tiny red dot indicating that the camera is there, and it’s currently recording us.

Mara yanks it out in one swift movement, disconnecting the battery as soon as it is in her hand.

“Be careful not to break it!” Jake exclaims.

Mara turns around, eye glaring in his direction, and yells, “Do you think I give a flying fuck about your stupid pervy camera?”

I butt in to diffuse the situation. “Where are the others?”

Jake whispers, “There’s only one more, and it is in the kitchen.

We follow him back inside the suite so he can show us where it is.

“On top of the fridge in your magazine rack?”

“It was something that no one messed with. A safe spot.”

Jake seems ashamed to the outside eye, but I can see that he is seething inside.

“So, that’s it? Only two?” I ask as Mara climbs on the counter to retrieve the other camera.

He nods his head a few times. “Yes. It was just the common areas to keep us safe in case someone hurt us or broke in.”

If he wasn’t already on my shit list, I might feel bad for him, but as it stands, I don’t.

Mara disconnects the battery before throwing both cameras and batteries into her room.

“Now, care to enlighten me on why you were crying?” Mara asks softly.

Shaking my head back and forth, I look at Jake before saying quietly, “No. I can’t.”

I’d like to go to sleep and wish this horrible day was a small, bad blip of my past.

Mara presses, “Shae, it doesn’t have to be like this.”

Her caring and best friend attitude causes tears to form and fall down my cheeks.

“I just need time to process everything first. Please.” I beg, not wanting to lie to her any more than I already have.

She lets out a long sigh before locking her gaze with mine. “I’m here if you need anything.”

She gives me a hug before turning back towards Jake. I use this opportunity to escape to my room and get some distance from the two of them.

After making sure my door is locked, I drag out the pictures Jake took today.

I stare at the images scattered around my bed. Damien and I look so happy and so in love.
