Chapter Seventeen

It’s been one week since the night I broke up with Damien.

One week of pure agonizing hell.

I’ve skipped all my classes this week and stayed locked in my room.

All day and all night.

Mara has tried to knock on my door and talk several times a day, but I just ignore her. There is no way I can deal with the world right now.

I usually wait until Jake and Mara head to class to shower, needing to feel somewhat human during my wallowing and self pity.

I snack when I have an appetite, which is nearly nonexistent, but I make sure I sip on water to stay out of the emergency room.

Today, I don’t feel like moving or doing anything, but I know I can’t miss another week of classes and still be able to graduate.

I will also have a lot of work to catch up on and only a little bit of time to do it.

Groaning, I climb out of bed and get ready for classes. Looking in the mirror, I see my eyes are still puffy from the long week of crying.

Great. There is no way to hide that.

I throw on a pair of fuzzy sweatpants and an oversized long sleeve shirt, despite the late spring weather.

Grabbing my bag, I slip my feet into a pair of flip-flops and head out to the living room.

Mara and Jake look at me with shock in their eyes.

“Please don’t gawk and stare at me like I’m a leper. I can’t miss any more classes and expect to graduate on time.” I mumble.

Jake speaks first. “You have to come out with us. It will be a roommate group date.”

Mara nods her head in agreement. “Yes! Come out with us before class starts. You need a good meal to help you keep your focus where it needs to be today.”

Since when is Mara working with Jake? I give them both a questioning glance but only get smiles in return.

What the hell happened over this past week that they went from mortal enemies to appearing like they are best friends?

I sigh and concede. “Fine, I will go out with the two of you, but only for a few minutes. I need to talk to my English professor and get the missed work.”

“I already talked to him and loosely explained the situation. I have everything you need in my bag, so you can stay a little while longer with us.”

Mara goes into her room to grab her bag, wallet, and keys.

While she is in her room, Jake leans closer to me and whispers, “You need to pretend to be happy with us today because Mara is suspicious that I had something to do with your unhappiness.”

“You are the reason.” I say bluntly.

He tsks. “Well, let’s pretend that I’m not. Okay? Or else it will all be for nothing, because I am one argument away from walking to the office and telling the dean about your relationship with a professor.”

I roll my eyes dramatically, but eventually agree. “Fine, whatever you say.”

I knew I was going to have to fake my happiness until graduation, so I was already prepared to plaster a fake smile on my face.

“So, where to?” Mara says, bouncing her way back towards us.

Jake chimes in and chooses for us. “How about the cafe? It always cheers people up. The coffee will perk you right up, especially if paired with a cupcake.”
