His tone is fake, but it is to be expected.

Something else seems up, like this is all part of a bigger and devious plan, but I can’t prove it right now.

Especially since Mara jumps with joy.

“Yes! The cafe! Oh, it’s been so long, hasn’t it Shae?”

She loops her arm in mine and practically drags me out of the house as Jake locks up.

Of course, it’s been a while since we went to the cafe because my life turned into shit.

The last time I was here was when Mara said she was going to investigate Damien, and the time before that is when I thought Damien was with Miss Blonde.

Neither time was memorable to me, at least not in a good way.

“Seems like ages ago.” I manage to say after a few awkward seconds.

Our walk to the cafe is quiet and peaceful. I try to pretend this is just any other ordinary day, but after everything I have been through, I can’t pretend that Jake is a friend.

There are only a few people in line as we walk through the door, but over half the tables are occupied.

Students gossip animatedly. Excitement about the semester coming to a close is heard in every conversation.

It makes me realize that I still need to apply for jobs.

I don’t have time to be consumed with my heartache. Real life is coming- quick, fast, and in a hurry.

We order our coffees and cupcakes without any problems or issues. Well, I order a blueberry muffin while Jake and Mara order cupcakes.

Service is exceptionally fast, and we don’t have to wait but a few moments for our stuff.

Jake immediately sits at a table in the middle of the cafe, despite Mara asking for a window table.

“I don’t like the window. I feel like people are always staring at me through the glass.”

Mara laughs. “Oh, please, no one is staring at you.”

He turns red with embarrassment and rage. “Why? Because I am a geek?”

She shakes her head. “No, because they want to see how long the line is. They want some warm coffee and sugary confections, just like everyone else.”

It makes me chuckle.

At least things between them didn’t change too drastically over the past week.

He is just pretending like nothing ever happened.

Mara gives me a smile of encouragement and I return it.

“It’s nice to see you smile.” She pauses before frowning. “Uh oh.”

Turning my head to the side, I see Damien sitting at a table by the window.

“Don’t look at him.” Jake’s tone is more of a demand, and I know without a doubt in my mind that he set this roommate breakfast thing up.

Jake wants to make Damien think I moved on and really meant what I texted. Anyone would believe a text was true after being blocked.

“Good idea.” Mara says, breaking the tension between Jake and me.
