“Did you recognize the other voice?”

Shaking my head, I sighed. “No, but something about the voice was familiar. I couldn’t place it. All I know was the man wasn’t happy with the mayor. Something about getting the investors back to the table. Do you think this has anything to do with the new Ski Hotel the mayor is trying to broker for the town?”

“I don’t know.” He frowned. “Come on. Let’s go inside. We can talk more where it’s warm.”

The clubhouse was nothing like I imagined.

Hell, I don’t know what I thought, but it wasn’t this.

The clubhouse was enormous. From the outside, it didn’t look like much, but once inside, it was massive. Walking in, the large gathering room was warm and welcoming. Comfortable couches sporadically placed around the room, with small tables and chairs, gave the room a comfy feeling. The log hewn walls gave the place a warm lodge feel. There was a large stone fireplace in one corner and a long bar along the far wall. Pictures, flags, and other memorabilia littered the walls. On the far-right side, a large staircase led to the second floor, wrapping around the main room, giving everyone up there a clear view of the whole space.

It was beautiful.

Homey.

Welcoming.

I stood there taking everything in, while Scribe took my coat and hung it on one of the pegs, before taking my hand and leading me over to the bar where everyone gathered.

“Line em’ up, Enigma!” King ordered, as the man behind the bar quickly started uncapping bottles of beer.

Scribe grabbed two, handing me one as King decreed, “To my new nieces and nephew! Let’s pray the girls are sweet and level-headed like their mother and the boy is nothing like his father!”

“AMEN!” Everyone laughed as they all cheered and drank.

I wasn’t really a beer drinker, but when in Rome, right?

Taking a drink, I tried to hide my wince.

My God, it tasted like piss water.

Placing the beer bottle back on the bar, Scribe pulled me against him, holding me around my waist.

“Enigma, get Henley a bottle of Sprite.”

The man behind the bar nodded, taking my beer away before placing a can of Sprite in its place.

Smiling, I whispered, “Thank you.”

Enigma winked before moving further down the bar. Everyone was laughing, talking joyfully, enjoying themselves as I leaned against Scribe and watched the merriment. I’d never seen such an eclectic group of individuals enjoy themselves.

They truly were a family.

Sometime later, I felt Scribe kiss the side of my head before he said, “Be right back, Princess. I need to talk to King for a minute.”

“I’ll sit with her, Scribe,” Bailey said, walking over.

Smiling at the pretty woman, Scribe narrowed his eyes. “Be nice Bails.”

The woman gasped, grabbing her chest. “I’m always nice!”

“And pigs fly,” he snipped, walking over to King.

Grabbing my hand, she said, “Let’s go sit down. They will be a while.”

Picking up my Sprite, I followed the vibrant woman to one of the smaller tables, where Scribe’s sisters and Skylar were all sitting. Taking a seat, I had just got comfortable when Bailey spoke, “Since pussylips refused to introduce us at the hospital, let me do the honors. I’m Bailey and that’s Freyja, Athena, Phoebe, and Skylar, but I think you’ve already met Sky. She’s Cameron’s sister.”

I nodded. “Yes. We met at the library yesterday. It’s nice to see you again.”
