We were one.

It was a heady feeling because for so long, I never thought I’d find someone whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. For years, I expected to live alone, become the crazy rat lady who everyone mocked and dismissed. Yet, in that one second of time, everything changed.

He was beautiful, strong, funny, and everything I thought I never wanted. In a matter of days, he changed my entire world. The loneliness I felt before was now replaced with hope, longing and desire.

I loved him.

I really and truly loved him.

I knew it was impossible to feel such things so quickly, but I did.

Like a romance book, he swept into my life like a whirlwind, and then, in the blink of an eye, he made everything better.

Sighing, I leaned my head against his when he released my lips as I tried to catch my breath. No one had ever kissed me like that before.

Hell... no one had ever kissed me.

Not bad for a first kiss, if I do say so myself.

“Wow,” I gasped.

“I can still feel you on my lips.”

“My body is tingling all over.”

“Maybe we did it wrong.” He chuckled. “I think we should try again.”

“We do that and I’m afraid we’ll set your truck on fire.”

“Works for me,” he said, grabbing me in his embrace, kicking the kiss up several notches until all I could do was hold on and enjoy the ride.

The man was gifted.

Truly and utterly gifted.

A loud bang had us swiftly pulling apart when I heard. “Not in public, Scribe. I’m not bailing you out of jail again!”

“Asshole,” Scribe grumbled.

Smirking, I watched as King and the others headed inside the clubhouse. All of them were laughing, I never even heard them drive up.

Looking at Scribe, I asked, “What did he mean by that?”

“Ignore him. He’s senile.”

“He looks sane to me.”

“Looks can be deceiving,” he grumbled. “We better get inside.”

“Why are we here?”

“Because until I find out whoever called you, you can’t go home.”

Oh yeah. I forgot about that.

So much had happened since that phone call.

“Scribe, I need to tell you something else. I went to work this morning. When I got there, I heard the mayor talking with someone. Mayor Stevens wasn’t happy.”
