“I don’t know. They all sound good with you on them,” I said, kissing her and taking her bottom lip between my teeth.

If I was right, we were going to test the strength of a lot more furniture than what she mentioned, because I didn’t think I’d ever have enough of her.

Tonight, we’ll make love till the sun comes up. Tomorrow, we must have conversations we can’t avoid any longer. Shemight hate me, but if she is alive to do it, then I can live with that.

CHAPTER 18

Ovi

Twenty-two hours of making love. I wasn’t sure if that was a record anywhere, but I’d never imagined it was possible. I couldn’t put that all on Niko. This morning he brought me a cup of tea in bed and tried to talk. Usually, I was the one trying to get him to talk, but earlier, I wasn’t ready.

It was the look in his eyes when he said ‘talk’ that bothered me. He looked serious. If he had regrets or was about to tell me that this couldn’t ever happen again, I didn’t want to hear it. Not yet. I was enjoying this little fantasy we were living in this weekend. Monday would be here soon enough, and this would need to end.

Niko got out of the shower and came to join me in the kitchen. “I’m glad to see you’re awake.”

“Were you going to leave without saying goodbye?” I asked.

“Never,” he said, walking over to kiss me on the cheek. “Are you making breakfast?”

I laughed. “Breakfast was twelve hours ago. It’s dinner time. But yes. I am starving. Would you like me to make you a sandwich too?” I offered.

“What are you making?”

“When I said sandwich, what I meant was would you like a butter and jam sandwich? I normally would go into town on Saturday to do my shopping. Somehow, I never made it. Now our choices are limited.”

“Butter and jam sandwich sounds great,” he said, taking a seat. “Does it come with coffee?”

I had been ready for that. I poured him a cup and placed it in front of him. “Thank you.” When I handed him his dinner, he said, “I know you have been avoiding us talking, but I can’t put it off any longer.”

“Niko, I’m just trying to make this last as long as possible. Why do you have to ruin it?” I asked.

“Ovi, I am not trying to ruin anything, but this is important. We really need to talk about your mother. About you,” he stated.

My mother? Me?Not the topics I anticipated.

“What about my mother?” I asked.

“Please come sit beside me,” he said. I did and then he reached out and took my hand in his.

“I thought you wanted to eat,” I said.

“No. I wanted to talk, you want me to eat,” he stated.

True.

“Fine. Talk. What is it you want to know about my mother?”

“I know your mother died from cancer,” he said.

“Yes. And?”

He looked uncomfortable, and it was driving me crazy. We just spent hours doing some very intimate things to each other, and now he can’t even talk to me?

“First of all, I’m really sorry for all you had to go through taking care of her. I’m sure it wasn’t easy,” he said.

“It was easier for me than it was for her. She was the one suffering,” I replied. The one fighting even when there was no hope.

I remembered going to the doctor with my mother and she was told that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and organs. They told her that the treatments weren’t working any longer and it was time to move to pain management. I refused to accept that. I told her to keep fighting, that we could go to another country and maybe they would have a cure. She said no. What she wanted was whatever time she had left to spend at home with us. The doctor said maybe six months. He was wrong. She only had two.
