“Because you thought it was something between you and Dani. Not the four of us.”

He frowns but he nods.

“Something that affects all of us.” I turn to Crew, who has the plastic container with the chicken I cooked yesterday in it. “And you didn’t tell us you’re not ready to get married.”

“I didn’t know I had to.”

“Exactly.” I sigh. “I get where you’re coming from. I understand where Nathan was coming from by not confiding in us. But we’re either all in this–all of this–or we’re not.”

But it’s clear we’re not. At least, not yet.

If we were, my proposal wouldn’t have gotten the reception it did.

“This is a mess,” Nathan says after a moment.

“Look, this is a lot. It’s all a lot.” I need to get my head on straight. “I’m still going to head out.”

Crew shakes his head but he says, “Do whatever you need to do, Doc.”

The use of the nickname indicates he may still be mad at me but he cares about me and I appreciate that. “I’ll be back tomorrow.”

Nathan watches me but he doesn’t say anything, so I head for the stairs to pack an overnight bag. I miss my girlfriend. We didn’t even get to celebrate our engagement properly.

And now I’m not even sure if weareengaged.

CHAPTER 27

Sammy the Malamute

(WADE)

Things aregood again in the Racketeer-verse.

There’s an amazing energy in the arena tonight.

McNeill is not only back on the ice, but he's playing like he hasn’t missed a beat. We are absolutely going to the playoffs and you can feel the electricity in the air.

His girl is back too. Danielle has missed a couple of games and no one has really said anything about it but everyone has noticed. There’s been some social media speculation, though people have mostly just assumed she’s been absent because Crew hasn’t been playing. But fans have been a little pissed about that, feeling she should have been here supporting the team anyway, which I agree with.

But it’s all been forgiven as of tonight. Crew’s back. The Racketeers are going into the third period up by two. And Danielle’s here, wearing Crew’s number, cheering them on like always and sitting with the radiant, beautiful, amazingLuna.

I don't know if it's just because we’re on the verge of the playoffs, or if it's the edibles I had just before I pulled on the fuzzy Sammy head, or if it’s because I just can't hold it in any longer, but tonight is the night. I am shooting my shot.

It's good to know all the people who work for the arena.

Especially the KissCam guys.

I make my way down to the seats where Luna and Dani are sitting.

The guys in the booth know that when I get to the end of the row, they're supposed to put Luna and Dani up on the screen. They're here together, so obviously they don't have anyone to kiss and they won’t kiss each other.

Not that I’d mindthat. Pretty sure a lot of people in the arena would also enjoy that…

I shake my head, forcing my focus back to my plan.

Tonight, Sammy the Malamute is making a move on Luna McNeill.

And then Wade is getting her number.
