But we really don't need to. We all know where we're going and why.

Finally, as we’re making our approach to the Decatur airport, Crew asks, "What are we going to do?"

I know the answer to this and I feel a strange sense of calm fill me as I say, "We don’t need todoanything. We just need to be there."

Crew nods and Nathan reaches over to squeeze my hand. My heart swells. These two men are so good. All three of my men are so good.

I won’t let them go.

Forty-five minutes later, we step into the waiting room.

Michael’s sitting with his mother, his forearms on his thighs, his head hanging.

Lorraine gives us a soft, loving smile.

"Michael.” She nudges him.

He looks up at her. Then she nods towards us.

He looks over to us. His eyes widen for just a moment. Then he's up off his seat, coming for us.

He wraps his arms around me, but quickly pulls the other two into his embrace.

"I love you guys," is all he says.

That’s all he needs to say.

CHAPTER 29

Michael

I don't knowif it's wrong, but I'm sitting in the waiting room waiting for news about my father, knowing it could be bad, and still feeling like my heart is full and I'm happier than I've been in days.

And it’s all because of three people.

My people.

Across from me, Dani is lying across the padded waiting room bench, her bare feet in Nathan's lap, his hand cupped around one of her feet. His eyes are shut and his head is propped against the wall beside him as he dozes lightly.

Her head is in Crew’s lap, and he's absently playing with her hair. His eyes are not closed, but he seems lost in thought.

They're here.

All they've done is hug me and say, “We love you too,” but they’re here and that means the world.

I don't need anything else. At least nothing they can give me.

I need to have a cardiologist tell me that my father's going to be okay.

I need to see my father sitting up in bed, grinning at me.

I need to see a heart monitor hooked to my father's chest, recording a steady, strong rhythm.

But Dani, Crew, and Nathan can’t give me any of those things.

Still, just looking at them across from me, having them here, seeing them together, makes everything feel better.

Sitting here in this waiting room feels like déjà vu. The last time I was here, the circumstances were similar. My father was back with a medical team working on him and we knew nothing.
