One song fades into the next as she pulls away from me and spins back around. Cassie leans against me, her hands traveling up and down her body as we dance. I feel like I’m coiled tightly and just waiting to snap.

Even though all I want to do is take her home and have my way with her, the smile on her face is enough to keep me here. She looks happy to be out here with me. It’s the first day we’ve had in a truly public place.

Seeing how excited she is about it only makes me want to take her on more dates.

There’s no way that I’m going to let her go after the hometown show. If I manage to hold onto her that long, then I’m going to make sure she knows what this is for me.

Right now, it seems too soon to tell her everything that’s going on in my mind. I don’t want to scare her away. Not when things are this good.

“What do you say we get out of here?” I ask, my voice husky as I graze her earlobe with my teeth.

Cassie shudders and nods, lust in her eyes. She turns and heads for the stairs, her hips swaying. I chuckle and follow her, knowing that she’s putting on a show. I head down the stairs in front of her before turning to wait.

When she reaches the bottom step, I loop my arms around her waist and lift her down, spinning her around in a slow circle. Cassie laughs and wriggles her way out of my embrace.

“I thought you wanted to get out of here?” Her voice is soft and sultry as I place my hand on the middle of her back and follow her out of the club.

The closer we get to my house, the more nervous I feel. My stomach tosses and turns as Cassie shifts slightly in her seat to look at me. She raises an eyebrow before looking back out the window at the trees blurring by.

“Where are we going?” she asks, moving a little closer to me. She kicks off her heels and tucks one leg beneath her. “This isn’t the way to your apartment.”

“You’re right.” I reach over and turn down the music. “The apartment is the place I keep for people who don’t need to know where I really live.”

Cassie chuckles and shakes her head. “Only you would have two homes just to keep people away from you.”

“Can you blame me?” I put a hand on her bare thigh, sparks shooting through my fingertips at the touch. Being with Cassie feels like being brought back to life. “Even though it’s been years, my family still comes sniffing around and looking for handouts. They only know about the apartment, though. They can’t bother me at my house.”

“I thought they would have given up on that a long time ago.”

“Yes,” I say, my tone bitter. Even though I came to terms with my shit family a long time ago, they’re still not people I want to talk about. “People don’t change.”

Cassie presses her lips together as I pull into the driveway. Her mouth falls back open when she sees the house with its dark stone walls and floor-to-ceiling windows, warm lights glowing from within.

I park the car and lead her into the house, my heart racing a mile a minute. Cassie is the first woman I’ve ever brought here. I don’t want her to look at the minimal furniture and think that this place means nothing to me.

This house is the one place where I feel free to be myself — whatever that looks like these days.

“This place is beautiful,” Cassie says as she makes her way across the red-toned hardwood floors. She runs her fingertips along the cream suede couch before looking at the leather armchairs.

“Thanks.” I kick off my shoes and tuck them beneath the entryway table. As I follow her into the living room, each step feels like a giant leap.

Being here with her is strange. It feels right, though. The scent of her citrus and vanilla perfume fills the space, making it seem more like home than it ever has.

“How many people have you brought back here?” Cassie asks, her voice wavering slightly.

I swallow hard, trying not to be hurt by the hesitation in her eyes. “You’re the only one.”

“You’re serious?”

My heart pounds as I nod. “I wouldn’t lie to you. Whatever is happening between us, Cass, I want it. All of it. The good and the bad. I’m serious about it.”

“Good,” she says with a soft smile. “I don’t plan on going anywhere, so it looks like you’re stuck with me for the time being.”

“Good. That’s what I was hoping for.”

My heart threatens to jump out of my chest. This isn’t the way I pictured this night going, but I’m happy it has. It feels like there’s been a shift in our relationship. The air is charged with electricity as she looks at me, her gaze dragging up and down my body.

Cassie wanders over to the staircase, glancing out the massive windows at the backyard. The woods are only a few dozen yards away from the house. None of my neighbors are close or visible.
