She worried herbottom lip for a spell. “I’ve got no idea.”

*****

She hurried in behindhim as he strode into his office.

“I didn’texpect you back here due to the lateness of the hour.” Lauratook several deep breaths to steady herself as she stepped into theoffice.

“I’m onlyhere for a short time.” He barely spared her a glance as heleafed through the documents that had been placed neatly and inchronological order on his desk. His assistant had color coded theones of importance. “My flight was ahead of schedule.”Lifting his head, he glanced at the folders she was carrying. “What’sthat?”

“Some documentsthat need signing. How was the trip?”

“Progressive.”He told her briefly.

“I could sendfor something in the kitchen- “

“I won’tbe here that long.” He sat down and reached out a hand for thefolders. “Just a few minutes to deal with the importantmatters. I need you to type up the notes from the meetings Iattended. The vineyard is doing well and finally yielding a profit.Take a seat.”

He went through themotions, busying himself with work so he didn’t have to thinkabout her. He’d spent the time flying from Italy thinking abouther and anticipating tonight. He’d also been battling with hisemotions.

The words she’dsaid to him were embedded on his mind and refused to disintegrate. Now, he was here and he knew she was in her office or should be. Hedidn’t know what to do.

He was leaving to goand visit Miriam and then go to his place to prepare- He broke offthe thought abruptly and concentrated on the woman sat across fromhis desk.

“That’senough for now.” Picking up the paperweight, he rolled it inhis hand. “I need to speak to Ms. Simpson.”

“Yes, sir. I’llcall her-“

“No. Have hercome to the office.” He glanced at his watch. “I havefive minutes before I have to leave.”

“I’ll getright on it, sir.” Laura rose gracefully, a slight smiletouching her lips. “It’s good to have you back.”

“Good to beback.”

He went through thecontract before him and made a few calls before the brisk knocksounded on the door before it was pushed open. He told himself hewasn’t going to be affected when he sees her after a few days’absence, but his treacherous heart and body betrayed him.

Her hair was sweptback from her face and secured at the back of her neck and she waswearing gold earrings. The sweater dress was hammered gold, the hemtouching the knee-high boots

“You summoned?”

He had to bite backthe laugh at her irreverent greeting and tried for a frown.

“I askedpolitely.”

She inclined her headgracefully as she came into the room and sat down on the chair, hisassistant had vacated. “Dragon lady did word the summon in aprofessional manner.”

He gave her a hoodedlook. “Her name is Laura.”

“Dragon lady-Laura – same difference.” Her smile peeked out and he wasslammed again as he stared at the lips that haunted his dreams. “It’sgood to have you back.”

His assistant hadsaid the same thing, but coming from Allison, it meant the world tohim.

“Good to beback. Are we still on for later?”

Allison wasn’tgoing to reveal how much that question meant to her. She’dalready done the unthinkable by blurting out how much she loved him,she wasn’t going to allow him to walk all over her because ofit.

“That depends.”

His heart plummetedinside his chest. “On?”
