“Are you stillcalling me by my surname?”

The relief heexperienced was so great, he had to take a breath before answering.“Only when we’re here.”

“Good enough.What time?”

“Around eight.I have a few stops to make.”

She rose then.“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“Anotherthing.” She said as she turned back to him.

“What?”

“I meant what Isaid about not sharing. Just think about it. I’m fiercelypossessive.”

He stared at her, hisface expressionless and she felt her heart hammering inside herchest.

“Duly noted.”

He watched as sheswept from the room, her curves seductive in the dress. He couldn’twait to sink himself inside her and the intensity of his need wasgiving him a hard time.

“You’reback!”

“I am.”Giving her a warm smile, he moved towards the chair to kiss her onthe cheek. “I see you’re looking well.” Reachinginto the pocket of his jacket, he took out an oblong package. “Ibrought you back something.”

“You didn’thave to.” She took the package from him and tore into thepaper. Nestled in the black velvet, the diamond bracelet sparkled andflashed. “It’s beautiful. Thank you.”

“You’rewelcome. How are you, really?”

“Frustratedbecause I’m laid up here and can’t go to the gallery.”She waved a hand at the wall where several paintings were stacked.“I’ve been working though. Oh Annie, could you bring ussome refreshments? Or would you like supper?”

“No.”Nash shook his head and was about to refuse the refreshments, but hedidn’t want to disappoint her.

“Refreshmentswill do.”

“How was yourtrip?” Miriam asked with a smile. “Oh, it’s so goodto see you Nash.”

She was the thirdperson who’d said that to him and he realized that Allison wasstill the most significant. Her parting shot about not sharing himwas still resonating inside his head. He’d told her he had astop to make and wondered if she guessed where he was heading.

“It wasprofitable.” He waited until the housekeeper had set the trayon the table.

“I’ll dothe honors.” He said with a nod that had the woman leaving theroom and closing the door behind her. He poured the hot chocolate andhanded Miriam the cup and saucer. There was an impressive display oftiny sandwiches and pastries with pink and white icing.

“I remembergiving you the first taste of hot chocolate,” She murmured asshe sipped the delicious hot beverage.

“I told youthat I wanted to marry you.” The amusement was in his voice ashe settled back on the sofa.

“I couldn’tbelieve you never had it before.” Her expression became misty.“I should have taken you up on the offer.”

“Miriam-“

“No.” Sheshook her head. “I’m just walking down memory lane.Something I have no business doing. You met someone.”

“What?”His head jerked up as he stared at her.
