“He lives,” she says with a smile in her voice.

“What’s with the million calls?”

“Sorry for disrupting your romantic retreat. How’s it going? Has Blake forgiven you?”

“None of your business.”

“I’ll take that as a yes. When’s the wedding?”

“Nice try, but we’re not discussing it.” I sigh. “Is there anything else besides your amateur sleuthing into my private life?”

“Actually, yes. We’ve just been notified the road has been cleared on your side of the valley, so you can go back to the hotel if you want to. Also, Thomas wants to know if he should wait for you, if you’re going back in the jet together, and if he should add Blake to the passengers manifest. He said he doesn’t mind leaving tomorrow if you want to spend tonight with Blake.”

“Give me a minute and I’ll call you back.”

The temptation to not tell Blake we’re free to go is strong. I’m afraid that if I do, she’ll say she’d rather go back to work and New York as soon as possible. But keeping this from her is something the old me would’ve done. Not the me I want to become, that I want Blake to fall in love with.

Doing the right thing sucks. I wanted nothing more than another night with her away from the world.

I wait on the bed until I can’t hear her muffled voice talking outside anymore, which takes a while, then, with a heavy heart, I step into the living room. Blake’s on the couch, frowning at her phone. “Hey.”

She drops the phone on the jute rug. “Oh, gosh, you scared me.”

“Sorry.” I sit next to her. “Mila called… The road’s been cleared; we don’t have to spend the night here if you don’t want to.”

Her blue eyes study me.

“Also, Thomas wanted to know if we’re coming back to the hotel…”

“You want to go back?”

“Heck, no,” I say without a second’s hesitation. “I want to spend the night with you, away from everything else.”

She nods. “Me, too.”

“Really?”

“Hey, don’t look so surprised. You’ve made my stay here extremely pleasant.” She flashes me a fish-eating grin.

I beam back. “And would you consider me too entitled if I offered you a ride back to the city on my father’s private jet?”

“Yes, but I’ll take it, anyway.”

I cup her cheeks and kiss her. “I—” I was about to say “I love you” again, but I don’t want to smother her with too many big feelings all at once. “I’ll go tell Mila. You keep working.”

BLAKE

The moment Gabriel goes to call his assistant, I hop into the bathroom and lock myself in, opening the chat with Marissa. I find a new text from her.

From Marissa

How’s the captivity going?

I think my next question is going to clarify a few things
