“You’ll see. It’s not that far.”

“You’re pretty secretive, you know that?”

“Only to build suspense. It’s a pretty impressive sight.”

I lead her along the edge of the mountain. The cliff is surrounded by a ridge of rocks, and on the brink, a huge tree towers above it all.

Among the thick tree branches lies my favorite place in the whole world.

“A tree house?” Blake asks, craning her neck up to admire it.

“More of a tree office.”

“I thought this was your place to forget about work.”

I move closer to the ladder at the base of the tree. “Oh, I don’t come here to work. But to read, reflect, and think. Whenever I have a big decision to make, I always hole up here for a few days.”

Blake nods. “Are we going in?”

I point to the ladder. “Ladies first.”

The structure is about ten feet above us, and we have to climb a ladder to reach it. I won’t lie and say I don’t enjoy the view going up.

At the top, Blake hauls herself up on the main deck and doesn’t wait for me before exploring the inside of the house. It’s more of a tiny meditation room with wide glass windows, a rug, and plush cushions.

Just as I pull up onto the deck, Blake comes out smiling like an overexcited kid. “This is like a dream. I want to become a pirate and come live here.”

I mock-frown. “Don’t pirates live on a ship?”

“Not when they’ve accumulated enough treasure, then they need a special hideout. This is going to be mine.”

When I reach the end of the oak platform, I gesture for Blake to come and stand by me.

We circle the house to the edge of the platform. The wind blows in our faces, and the view is impressive. I can make out the shapes of houses, the dark green treetops, and the dirt road along the cliff.

“It’s incredible,” Blake murmurs, admiring the unaltered nature. “I’ve never seen anything so clearly.”

“You can see everything from up here.” I take her hand and wrap my arm around her waist, pulling her close to my chest.

Her hair is blowing in the wind and it feels so good to hold her.

“So you were planning a Titanic move,” she jokes.

“Is it working?”

“Totally.”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the next part of the scene one of the most-watched kisses in Hollywood history?”

“If I remember correctly, he sang a little song to her first.”

“You want me to serenade you?”

“Please don’t,” she says. “Last night’s performance was enough.” She turns her neck backward to look at me. “But I’ll take the kiss.”

I tip my face into her blowing hair, letting the scent of her wash over me until my lips are against her ear. “How could I say no when you ask so nicely?”

Blake turns her head fully until her lips are nearly on mine. I close the gap, joining our mouths again, wrapping my arms around her from behind. We kiss like in the movie, with her head turned and tilted back, surrendering to the wind, to the emotion, to the inevitable.
