Her words go straight to my gut, and I can’t help myself. “Does that mean flying-off clothes are on the table?”

“Not yet.”

“So what’s next?”

“Tell me something about yourself. Something no one knows.”

“Why?”

“You’re the first person I’ve told about Justin’s words that night. Even Marissa only knows about the kiss.”

Talk about setting fire to the ground under a man’s feet. A wave of heat and need washes over me and ignites my blood. That she would confide in me, trust me with one of her most painful memories, makes me only want her more.

“I’m afraid I’ll never get what my parents have,” I say without thinking.

“And what is that?”

“The certainty that you’ve found your person, your soulmate. I’ve been in love before, but my last relationship ended a long time ago. Sometimes I think I haven’t found anyone because I work too much, at other times I’m afraid it’s not in the cards for me.”

“Why?”

“Even with all my past girlfriends it never felt just right. I never had that certainty, you know?”

She mock-frowns at me. “Not even with the girl you went down a sewer grate for?”

“No, not even close.” The smile dies on her lips, and before I can say something even more stupid like I’ve never felt the stars align until now, I look away at the towering mountains surrounding us.

“I have a question for you,” I say.

“Oh?”

I turn to her, dead serious. “Do you like the view?” I make a cute face.

She throws a bun of bread at me. “You’re despicable.”

“Am I?”

“One hundred per cent.” She takes in the stunning scenery around us. “But at least your taste in retreats from humanity is spot-on. This is a stunning place to escape from the real world.”

“There’s something else I like to do up here.” I extend my hand for her to take.

“Seduce unaware women?”

“No.” I smirk. “Even if I’ve nothing against that particular activity. Come with me. I want to show you something.”

She looks past me to the house, looking half curious, half terrified.

“Don’t worry, it’s not the bedroom.”

She tilts her head, smiling again. “No, it’s not that, I was just trying to gauge how much you look like Leonardo DiCaprio in that Titanic scene.” Now she makes a mock-sweet dude voice. “Do you trust me?” And back in her normal voice. “Is there a windy railing somewhere that you want me to use as a flying prop?”

“Now who’s being despicable?”

“All right, Jack Dawson, show me what you got.” She finally takes my hand and I pull her up with me.

I lace our fingers as we walk up the trail. She doesn’t fight me. Maybe I should’ve kissed some sense into her a lot sooner.

“What’s this thing you want to show me?”
