The only part of my body that could move was my eyes, and they widened in shocked horror. That voice. It came from the depths of my memory, from that awful night of my first shift when I was at the fae party. It was the last thing I remembered before finding myself covered in blood and running—a voice calling to me from the darkness.

Those few words echoed like nightmarish bells in my head.“Young one? Come. I want to show you something.”

Simon crossed his arms over his knees and gazed at me. “I want to thank you for helping me fake my death all those years ago. None of this would have been possible without you, dear girl.” He reached down and caressed my cheek, then stood and looked at Leif. “Bring her.”

He strolled away from me. My vision went gray, blackness covering the periphery. The last thing I saw before going under was Leif grabbing my foot and dragging me across the jungle floor, following Simon toward the volcano.

All I wanted was to call out to Wyatt, to scream for help. Instead, my eyes slipped closed. Just before I fell into the endless black depths, I heard Simon speaking to me again.

“My first truly successful experiment. You were the beginning. Perhaps now, you’ll be the end as well.”
